Thanks for all the great help I am getting from the forum. Here is a newbie question. I realize I need to rethink gun care for the two guns I plan to get for myself and wife. We live in a two bedroom apartment. No garage or balcony. I will have to clean and lube the guns inside. I have a folding plastic table to do this. We have a 4 year old daughter, a small dog, and a cat. I do not want harsh chemicals and strong fumes. That being said, what can I use for a gun cleaner? I watched an AGI gun smith video and the instructor used Simple Green and water. He soaked the field striped gun in Simple Green and let it sit for a bit, then cleaned and rinsed it, then dried with towel and canned air.
Knowing I am in an apartment and in an in closed space, what is your advice?

Eco Gun Cleaner ?

Check out Gunzilla...
I have used it for years, it has totally taken the place of Hoppes #9 for me .
The smell of Hoppe's was like perfume to me, to my wife, not so much!!!
So, I use Gunzilla, my guns are clean, she is happy.
I have no affiliation with their company, but I sure can feel good about promoting their product.
It is supposed to be plant and water based, but absolutely does not cause rust.
I have never figured that one out ???
It is a lot more expensive, but I shoot and clean guns every week and still only use a big bottle maybe every 6 months.

I have used Gunzilla since about 2007. Was introduced to it through my son who used it in Iraq when he was deployed for 15 months. The inventor of the product lives in Michigan and have had the privilege of meeting him and talking to him on the phone. When I told him of my sons request, he made sure he received it quickly (within 4 days). He made sure his men used it instead of the Army issued junk that caused their weapons to jam. I use it for my guns exclusively. You will not be disappointed.

I'm using Hoppe's Elite in place of the old Hoppe's #9.

I've been using Gunzilla on all of our guns since they were new and it seems to work pretty well. Similar situation, have to clean everything inside, in the kitchen, and this stuff doesn't smell bad at all. And, I like that it doesn't contain any hazardous chemicals (hazardous enough to be contained on a MSDS anyway). I can't compare it to anything else as it's all we've ever used.

Just an FYI... My daughter helped me after a day at the range and either the Gunzilla or the lead removal cloth melted her fingernail polish so you may want to be aware of that. Not sure which one it was but good to know if wife/daughter just had their nails done. ;)

Have a friend who is a gunsmith and he says the Mpro 7 products are pretty good too. But I don't have any personal experience with them yet.

I started using the M-Pro 7 products in 2008 when a gunsmith in our area told me about them.

Work great, not toxic and don't smell.

I would still suggest keeping areas clean with kids and pets around. Be careful with your bore brushes as they can make moist lead dust airborne if only briefly. Cover your cleaning area with a dedicated plastic or something similar and pack away when done.

I use Simple Green all the time on my stainless guns, it gets them c-l-e-a-n, but I'm a bit leery about on using it on any blued guns and with those I stick to good 'ol Breakfree.

Balistol is advertised as the world's most envirionmentally friendly CLP.

Bio-degradeable, their website says "developed in Germany to maintain the metallic parts of the soldier's rifle but also to protect the wooden stocks and his leather gear. The soldier was to use the same oil for the treatment of minor wounds, sores and scratches".

I bought a can... it's has a distinctive odor. I haven't gotten around to using it on a firearm yet, but I can tell you it works great on cleaning pitch off of a table saw blade and protecting it from rust.

My money is on the lead away cloth - those things will take blue off a gun.

Froglube smells like Pepto. Not bad but better than Hoppes which gives me a massive headache.

I've been using Froglube for the last two years. It works ok. But what sold me to it is to be able to clean my guns inside without the nasty fumes that were giving me headache. Also, it's nice not to get my clothes dirty with oil when CCW.
