NORMA 38 SPECIAL – 158 GR – FMJ

I bought a 686 Plus last weekend. When I looked for ammo Norma had this ammo on sale with free shipping so I bought some.

I was going to try chronographing some of magnum rounds I also purchased but when I pulled my chronograph out for the first time in many years I found the battery I left in it corroded and it will not even power up. So I will not be chronographing any ammo anytime soon.

In general Norma has historically been quite optimistic about how powerful their ammo is. They even put an asterisk next to the velocity on the box to let you know it was measured in an industry standard test barrel, not a real gun. Their claimed velocity of 968 ft/s for 329 ft-lbs of energy is pretty hot for a heavy 38 that is not +P. I am expecting about 100 to 150 ft/s less out of a 4" barrel.

I am going to use it as range ammo so reliability and accuracy is all that matters in my case. As with most factory ammo reliability is a given. Aside from inflated velocity claims I have never had an issue with Norma ammo.

No chrono results. I did buy 500 rounds of the Norma 158 fnfmj several months ago on sale, and tried some thru my 4 inch model 28 and 4 inch 586. Hit pretty close to the sights in both guns, seemed clean burning, and felt a little hotter than the typical 130 grain fmj stuff. I like the bullet profile in this load, and its a great deal when on sale for great quality range ammo.
