I've been carrying a stainless 2 3/4" Speed Six this summer as my Model 13 needs almost daily cleaning to prevent rust in the rather hot and humid eastern North Carolina IWB summer carry conditions.

I've been looking for a 3" Model 66, but they are... a little hard to find...particularly for reasonable money.

I saw this 2 1/2" Model 66-4 yesterday in one of the local gun shops and initially passed on it, but then came back about an hour later. After a careful inspection, I bought it any way to replace the Speed Six for summer carry.

Oddly enough, the serial number prefix "BSF" is not in my Standard Catalog.

As a Model 66-4 it obviously falls in the 1994 - 1998 age range.

"BRF" prefixes are listed for August 1994, with the big jump to "BVA" in 2003 and the more sequential "CAM" in January 2006.

It also came with the original Uncle Mikes grips that were added to the 2 1/2" in 1994, but it lacks the MIM trigger change made in 1997. So I'm guessing it was probably made in late 1994. If anyone can narrow that down a bit more I'd appreciate it.

Good looking 66!!!

I have a 66-4 with the serial prefix of "CAA"...it was shipped in Nov. '94

Congrats on a fine handgun.

The -4 itieration is my favorite mostly from an aesthetic standpoint with modifications made to the top strap area and before changes to the MIM parts.

Mine has serial number CBKxxxx and dates to May, 1997.

I agree - great for IWB carry.

Most excellent revolver, Congrats!

It must be a fate thing, every time I think I've got my self talked out of buying a 66 2.5" someone posts pics of one.

Had a 19 and 66 4" back in the day.

I know I'll end up getting one if I can find one local. Just checked that auction site and there's a 3" with 8 days to go and 17 bids up to $1,025.

Little difference, other than status, between a 2.5" and a 3". You will see no difference in performance or how they carry. You have a gem, love it forever.

There is a difference. The post above mine neglects the longer extractor rod stroke of the three-inch barrel and the velocity is higher with that added half inch of barrel, more than you'd think. But can you afford to carry a three-inch M-66? That's a valuable collectors gun.

I think the three-inch M-65 is the best answer to this need. It's common enough to find, and not so pricy. But your snub M-66 is a great gun, too. I had the blue M-19 version. Your stainless one is preferable for carry, of course.

Please post pics of the Ruger. I like those, too.
