Not a good time to command Russian troops

In addition to that.......Ukranians are suffering.

Putin has one strong ally.........winter.

This winter will cause Ukrainians to suffer a lot more........heat and electricity and food will be in short supply.

And in Russia.......there are no such problems.

Meanwhile, Putin can continue to bombard and reduce major Ukrainian cities to rubble making their life even more miserable.

The winter will also harshly impact the European NATO members and weaken their resolve to support Ukraine.......especially if Putin shuts off their gas for heating.

All in all, Russia is in a far better position than our Media give credit for.

Just change the names between the aggressor and defenders. That’s sounds like the German High Command description of the siege of Stalingrad. How did that work out?

Der Veminator,

Regarding the nuclear power plant in
southern Ukraine, press reports have
been clear that the shelling has NOT
been directly on the plant itself.

Stories indicate that the shelling from
BOTH SIDES has involved nearby towns.
But the dangers of a misdirected round
is what keeps the nuclear power station
staff so worried.

Regarding how many tanks have been
knocked out, reports have been clear
that the Russian tactics suck beyond
belief and ambushes have been quite
easy. The Russians apparently do not
screen their armor with infantry or
cavalry scouts. And the Russians have
allowed their armor to get caught in
bunches with drones showing their
positions.

As to comparisons with the Gulf War,
that war occurred in days, not months
and months, for scores on tanks.

As to reporting overall, many Western
journos are embedded with Ukraine
forces and much on-hand reporting has
been given.

Does The American Conservative have
its journos on the ground as well or
does it report the "facts" based on its
agenda alone?

Have the Ukrainians been good at
public relations with the Western journos.
You bet it has but that doesn't mean
their reports are to be totally rejected.

Not true......many reports have blamed the Russians.

These reports have been swallowed as true by many even though it would mean that the Russians were shelling themselves, since they occupied the plant.

Here's an example:

What Happens If Shelling Continues at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant? - The New York Times

And although a Russian shell hit the No. 1 reactor, its thick walls protected it from damage, the Ukrainian government said at the time.

As someone else posted, truth is the first casualty of war.

Apparently it's also not a good time to have dual citizenship. News is just coming out, but I don't foresee a good ending...

Der Veminator,

As to comparisons with the Gulf War,
that war occurred in days, not months
and months, for scores on tanks.

The heaviest losses were in the first days of the hottest fighting.

The Russians were spread thin and totally disorganized.

Since their equipment maintenance is extremely poor, many tanks simply quit running and were destroyed by their crews to keep the Ukrainians from getting them.

As can be expected, the Ukrainians claimed to have destroyed such tanks.

And as usual in war........both sides are lying and the truth in numbers generally is somewhere in the middle.

Guess you never heard of "friendly fire." Happens
regularly.

It happens, but not likely with artillery unless the power plant were under attack in close combat........which was not the case at that time.

Right.

I don't think anything can be rejected from either side except the most obvious and ridiculous lies.........and there are many from both sides.

UPDATE:

Started this thread on Sept. 26 at 9:35AM.

Now Sept. 28 at 9:28AM.

New reports indicate the new Russian troops are already in Ukraine, some killed, some captured.

Less than 48 hours. For new conscripts this means zero training or preparation. For prior service reserves this means no time for refresher training, intel briefings, anything.

Appalling.

Here's a good example of the information problem.

Independent source has it at about a thousand Russian tanks destroyed.

Ukrainians claim over two thousand.

Our Media generally go with whatever Ukraine says.

Russia does not comment on battle losses.

Over half of Russia’s tank losses recorded by Oryx, which verifies destroyed, captured or abandoned tanks using open source information, occurred in the first 50 days of the war as Russian forces attempted to seize the Ukrainian capital.

“Losses have fluctuated throughout the conflict,” said Jakub Janovsky, a contributor to Oryx’s tally, which is based on open source information.

“In the first month Russia lost an insane number of tanks and other vehicles because the Russians were spread so thin over a huge area of Ukraine,” he said.

In particular, Ukrainian forces used portable Western-supplied anti-tank weapons to destroy advancing Russian columns, including many tanks, in the areas north of Kyiv.

Of the 1,012 Russian tank losses documented by Oryx in an update Saturday, 34 percent were abandoned by their crew, a high percentage that military analyst Rob Lee attributed to poor planning and logistical failures in an article Tuesday.

“A lot of tank losses are happening because tanks are damaged or have some mechanical malfunction and are later destroyed because they can't be recovered,” Janovsky said.

Looks live the pool of Russian MAMs is shrinking.

But what he went on to say may seriously strain Kazakhstan’s ties with its giant northern neighbour and former imperial master.

Tokayev instructed his government to help tens of thousands of Russian men that flooded his nation because of the chaotic and massive partial military mobilisation for the war in Ukraine.

Almost 100,000 Russians have entered Kazakhstan since September 21, when Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the mobilisation, the Kazakh interior ministry said on Tuesday.

Sold out flights. Border crossings backed up for kilometers. For Russians fleeing President Vladimir Putin's partial military mobilization, it's not so easy to get out.

Georgia remains one of the few exits left, with long lines of cars stretching for kilometers at the only crossing from Russia into Georgia at Verkhny Lars-Zemo Larsi. (Unconfirmed reports on September 26 suggested that Russia may be moving to close the crossing to most Russian men.)

RFE/RL's Live Briefing gives you all of the latest developments on Russia's ongoing invasion, Kyiv's counteroffensive, Western military aid, global reaction, Russian protests, and the plight of civilians. For all of RFE/RL's coverage of the war, click here.

Many Russians trying to get into Georgia have been taking to social media to ask questions, seek advice, and share their experiences.

"We got in today. There are three of us in the family, including my husband (34 years old). They did not ask anything either on our side or on the Georgian side [of the border]," said one Russian in a Telegram chat devoted to the Verkhny Lars-Zemo Larsi border crossing. "The wait is very long! We got in line at 17:00 in the evening and we entered Georgia at 11:00 [the next day]. Stock up on water and food."

But many Georgians apparently have little sympathy. "You are only worried about not being killed in Ukraine. You had seven months to speak out against the war, but until they knocked on your door, you supported Putin," one person posted in the chat group.

Security Alert for U.S. Citizens in Russia

U.S. Embassy Moscow, Russia (September 27, 2022)

Event: On September 21, the Russian government began a mobilization of its citizens to the armed forces in support of its invasion of Ukraine. Russia may refuse to acknowledge dual nationals’ U.S. citizenship, deny their access to U.S. consular assistance, prevent their departure from Russia, and conscript dual nationals for military service.

Commercial flight options are extremely limited at present and are often unavailable on short notice. Overland routes by car and bus are still open. If you wish to depart Russia, you should make independent arrangements as soon as possible. The U.S. Embassy has severe limitations on its ability to assist U.S. citizens, and conditions, including transportation options, may suddenly become even more limited.

U.S. citizens should not travel to Russia and those residing or travelling in Russia should depart Russia immediately while limited commercial travel options remain. The Department of State provides information on commercial travel on the Information for U.S. Citizens in Russia – Travel Options Out of Russia page on travel.state.gov. This site also provides information on requirements for entering neighboring countries, procedures for travel on expired U.S. passports in some circumstances, and visa requirements for families with American and Russian citizen family members.

We remind U.S. citizens that the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are not guaranteed in Russia. Avoid all political or social protests and do not photograph security personnel at these events. Russian authorities have arrested U.S. citizens who have participated in demonstrations.

Actions To Take:

• Read the Department’s Travel Advisory for Russia.

• Carry proper identification, including a U.S. passport with a current Russian visa.

• Have a contingency plan that does not rely on U.S. government assistance.

There are indications of heightened tensions.

Is there such a thing as a SMALL nuclear strike?

Seems like any nuclear strike would be pretty substantial--both politically and in physical damage.

The United States and its allies are concerned that they could be too late to detect a small Russian nuclear strike on Ukraine, Politico reported Tuesday, citing five unnamed current and former U.S. officials.

Russia has 23 dual-use weapon systems that can deliver both conventional and low-yield nuclear warheads, one official was cited as saying. Many of them have been used with conventional munitions in Ukraine, according to Politico.

Retired Lt. Gen Ben Hodges, former
commander of the U.S. Army in
Europe, warns a replacement for
Putin could be worse.

"No shortage of super-hawk right-wing
nationalists," he says.

If a negotiated end to the war occurs,
he believes things will remain the same
in Russia. Only total defeat of its
army in Ukraine will be of any value,
he believes.

I don't know that winter is his ally. Maybe to some degree, but it did not help him when the war began last February.

To his new reserve troops that will be getting killed on the front line, winter will kill their morale. I predict the troops will be sabotaging equipment and deserting so fast they get windburn. Especially since they can get asylum in Ukraine

That's a good guess, and you could be right.

I have to wonder if asylum in Ukraine is such a pleasant prospect........since the Ukrainians will be suffering without heat and electricity and food........maybe not so much........in fact, Ukrainians may be hostile.

Here's my guess.

Putin is doing the Ali Shuffle and the Rope a Dope right now.

He won't do much this winter.

He'll back off and let winter do most of the work for him.......as he continues to turn the Ukraine to rubble with rockets and artillery.

As for those new troops, there will be traitors and there will be loyal sons of Mother Russia who will train during the winter and be ready for a spring offensive.

Meanwhile, support for Ukraine in the EU will falter as they suffer the worst winter in their recorded history as Russia shuts off gas for heat.

The U.S. taxpayer will be asking how much we are going to spend to rescue the Ukrainians........and thinking the cost is too great.

Spring will bring new attitudes.

Portions of the east and south Ukraine will be ceded to the Russians as part of a peace agreement.

Everyone will declare victory.

Putin will have his Black Sea Oil and Ukraine will have their freedom.

Is my guess any better than your guess?

Time will tell.
