Stupid question, help me out here and confirm my thought process and or logic/flawed logic...

As I understand it, all of the Magpul stocks EXCEPT the PRS (Precision Rifle / Sniper) stock, use 'standard' carbine buffers aka Receiver Extensions and therefore are compatible with the molded plastic 'buffer tube' that is sticking off the pack of the 15-22 i... but because the PRS Stock uses an actual RIFLE BUFFER receiver extension, the longer sized one, it won't work on the 15-22 right? (Because since the 15-22 has the hard plastic molded tube on the receiver it's not changeable etc. so you get what you got, right?)

i'm just curious because, my 15-22 is set up the way I like it and it's going to stay that way....... BUT.... I'm having a hankering for another one DOH!

The truth is, if I listen to that b1%*$#ch addiction when she whispers in my ear, tellling me to succumb to her opiate receptor ravishing ways that call for immediate pacification with S&W M&P 15-22 rifles.... I really like my current (Which of course is the best ever displayed on this forum, sorry guys who thought yours was the coolest :p) and mine is set up for 'CQB' and it's much more of a SOCOMish M4 rifle, with the Aimpoint Micro and the stock closed all the way (permanently, NJ allows no modificatiion or adjusting or folding/collapsing/buffing to a high glossy shine) -of an stocks... because you could rob a bank and commit murders so much easier with your stock adjusted.... YOU CAN actually CLOSE THE STOCK ALL THE WAY CLOSED, and Permanently affix it that way, making it A PERMANENT BANK ROBBING UTILITY/TOOL, just can't do it sometimes one way/sometimes another way,.

SO i have been thinking about another 15-22, starting from scratch, and making it a different style of 15-22... a scoped rifle style AR rather than Red dot reflex style. I'm thinking a patented Suburban Sniper Scrappy style rifle...SDM/RRR --- Scrappy's Desingated Marksman/Recce Rimfire Rifle...

and just for the sheer tacticoolest factor, a Magpul PRS Stock would be so cool but, could I do it?

Not easily or without permanently modifying your firearm. You could theoretically cut the fake receiver extension off, tap a whole where it used to be, and screw the PRS receiver extension into it and you would have a PRS on your 15-22. Then you would have to block up the extension again to hold the 15-22 bolt assembly in place. Is it possible? Definitely. Will it be a lot of effort and possibly ruin your firearm if you mess up? Yup.

I say if you really want to - go for it. I am sure everyone here would want to see you do it and post a tutorial when your done. It would be really cool if you get it to work.

If you cut the tube off your 15-22 you will be upset, its hollow near the back of the reciever, nothing to bolt to.

PainterlyShotgroup, great job and nice results. My question and I mean no dis-respect, was it worth the effort. I have worked with epoxies and like Liquid Weld, and they have cracked in the long run at times. I mean you have the look but the stock setup was the same so I just don't see the need for all that work.. Just my .02 cent.. Again great job, you are skilled for sure. Thanks.

Hey Aceman, Thank you and no worries, no dis-respect taken. Was it worth it? I'd have to say that so far, yes, I am happy with it. But you are right, it was a lot of work and while I did go in with a game plan, it all could have gone wrong and I would have a ruined gun. So it's not the route for everyone. But I know I'm not the only guy with a 15-22 who's thought about it.

The tinkerer in me is always wondering if I went about it right and if I really found the right solution for modifying it. So far it has held up very nicely. I've even thrown the lower on to the ground to see if that would break it. I suppose if I really really tried to break it I could, but I think if you really really tried to break the integral tube you could as well. Time will tell if it holds. But even if it breaks it will still be fixable.

My one concern, and I'd ask this specifically to you Aceman or any other LEO on the forum, is about the legality of this mod. I looked and could not find anything one way or the other both in the NFA or my state on the issue. The gun as modified is the same length as the stock 15-22, the stock is a fixed post-ban and is not coming off without rendering the gun useless. It's compliant in every way I can think of. In reality all I did was swap out one extension tube and stock for another. Something you'd easily do without question on a real AR. I guess it's just the extent of the mod that has me concerned.
What do you think?

Usually designated marksman stocks are non collapsible type stocks, so I am not sure there are any that will fit on a milspec tube. However, there are a lot of stocks, so I could be wrong.

A lotof the Magpul offerings have friction locks which tighten up on the receiver extension to eliminate wobble. I believe there are a few other options that have similar things. These might be your best bet for an easy upgrade to a "precision" stock.

why not just build a dedicated ar22? you can get a frontier complete lower and a .22 upper for less than a new 15-22. then you can put whatever ar bits you want with no mods.
