We've had a number of threads on here discussing patriotic themes such as Taps, respecting the flag, the NFL and kneeling, and free stuff for veterans.

November is a big month in US military history. Saturday, Nov 10, is the Marine Corps Birthday. Semper Fi, Leathernecks.

Sunday is of course Veteran's Day.

Nov 8, 1965 was the date of the joint US-Australian Operation Hump in Viet Nam. During the operation, the US 173rd Airborne was ambushed by 1200 Victor Charlie. That day we suffered 48 US KIA.

Army Medic Lawrence Joel earned the MOH on that day. The first black MOH since the Spanish- American War.

Yesterday in 1942, the SEABEES went ashore in North Africa with the Allied Assault Forces.

The 12th Nov 1942 was the beginning of the Naval Battle for Guadalcanal.

On 20 Nov 1943 was the amphibious assault of Tarawa.

On 28 Nov 1775, the Navy Chaplain Corps was established.

On 30 Nov 1944, the SEABEES formed CBMU 627 to operate Rhino Ferries at Cherbourg, France.

When I was still in uniform, I strongly encouraged my unit to participate in Veteran's Day activities. Once involved, most found it a rewarding experience and regularly volunteered and brought along their families and friends.

Wishing a rewarding Veteran's Day for all my fellow brothers in arms.

Photos of family and the last is my best friend who is no longer here. Veterans all who are on my mind so often.

1 great(3x) Grandfather and 3 sons, were on the British side of the Revolution (German Mercenaries, never got paid, but we've been here ever since!)
I had 3 great grandfathers in the 1861-1865 conflict,
1 great great uncle in the Indian wars of the 1880's,
he and another in the Spanish-American War,
One of them in Peaking for the Boxer Rebellion (he also was a state-side cook in WWI & II),
1 great uncle in WWI (still there)
1 uncle in Army Air Corp for WWII.
1 uncle in Army Infantry for WWII
1 Uncle rode a glider into Normandy, 1/325 Airborne Infantry Regiment
1 uncle invaded Lebanon in 1956 and was in Vietnam (and several friends) USMC
My brother-in law's regiment was in Grenada. (1/325 AIR)
My best friend was part of Desert Storm with several of friends'
Second son went on terrorist hunting opps in2002 (Philippines) USMC
Oldest son in Iraq 2004-2005 1st Armor Div.
Numerous family and friends in Active and Reserves over the last 75 years.

One combat fatality (WWI), no other combat injuries (except 3 PTSD).

Service to God and our Country has made our family very strong! And while small in numbers, we are literally from coast to coast!

November 1942 was also the month of Operation Torch for the invasion of North Africa. the Allies were lucky that the Germans were not there to defend the beach. the war would have went on for a lot longer if they had been there

"An Army at Dawn" by Rick Atkinson is a very good read

In years passed, Navy SEABEE units marched in Veteran's Day Parades and assisted WWII SEABEE Vets to participate. Usually we spent the entire day with the CBVA WWII vets enjoying cookout with friends and family.

If you live near a city that has a Veteran's Day Parade, attend as either a spectator or as a participant. Take your kids or grandkids. It will be fun for them and you can make it an educational experience.

Ivan, my friend, that is impressive. I always took it for granted that my relatives served before me. Some suffered but all survived, if you dont count Agent Orange. One Uncle was in the Philippines in 1942. Three and 1/2 years in a Japanese prison camp. Anther Uncle, Anzio combat Veteran. Another Uncle, Airman, shot down in France, Two years in a German POW camp. Another, half track gunner, 4 50 cal.
Ivan, thanks for reminding me to fire up a prayer for them and all that gave.
