Nowhere is really safe anymore.....

I got a blurb on this earlier. Agreeing to meet someone you don't know, carrying cash to buy something off Craig's list is not a good plan.

craigs list has had many bad things happen to people, but alot of people have had made good deals there . just goes to show you you just cant trust everyone. just like having to look over your shoulder when parking your car to go to the store

Remember, up here a couple of predators were using fake job offers on Craig's list to rob and murder people.

When my Canon S720 photo printer died a few months ago, people in a couple of the photo discussion forums suggested that I buy the replacement off of Craig's list. Noting the murders here, I declined to meet a stranger with cash, in order to buy something I couldn't test before I paid for it.

The kids claim he was "careful". I wonder whether he was armed.

I'd NEVER carry THAT amount of money without being armed, and wouldn't do it based on a Craig's List ad in any case.

When silver was going crazy I sold about 30 oz to finance a couple of s&w purchases via craigslist. I gave the man one choice of where we would meet and that was the suwannee ga police dept parking lot and I still went armed. He told me it actually made him feel better to do it this way also. Went off without a hitch.

For fear of getting the ban hammer, I'll keep quiet.

The family are in my prayers.

Other than as seen on Miami Vice little notice was given to piracy in South Florida waters.I knew a couple at Treasure Cay BI who were selling a house to someone who was leaving Fla to sail with cash. They never showed up again?
Another friend had a boat built in Miami. When they were to pick it up and sail to Charleston the builder advised them to come heavily armed.
Both cases were the 1970's to early 1980's.

I sold a car and bought a canoe and a fly fishing rod off there. Due diligence and don't be stupid.

Really sad how that turned out. I've done a lot of buying/selling on Craigslist and always meet in a public location that is well lit while keeping my "little" friend tucked at the 4 o'clock position. If someone seems a little shady or sketchy I have them meet me at the gun shop/range parking lot down the road. I know everyone that works there and the store is always busy.

Evil is everywhere, and it's certainly nothing new. I bought my current car off Craigslist, met the seller in the lobby of a hotel. Those of you who live in "shall issue" CCW states-I envy you.

Craigslist isn't safe.

From 2012:

"Lured by Craigslist ad, St. Paul teen killed in robbery"

From 2013:

"Newlyweds Accused of Thrill-Kill Craigslist Murder"

From 2015:

"Man answering Craigslist ad robbed, shot at"

And so on.

Craigslist gets 50 Billion, with a B, views a month. Odds of being murdered off there are remote, extremely remote. Things were far more dangerous in terms of travel and commerce a few hundred years ago. Hiwaymen, robber knights, river pirates, etc are largely extinct. Yet 200 years or so ago, the country was infested with them, and hostile Indians too.

Craig's List Not At Fault

You may be lured into a trap by word-of-mouth, an ad posted at the health club bulletin board or local supermarket or ads posted in the papers.

On Long Island, NY a young prostitute was lured into a situation resulting in her death, from a Craig's List ad. The search for the girl yielded her body plus at least 10 other sets of skeletal remains.

Yet, I don't blame Craig's list. You must anticipate what you may be getting you're into. Blaming Craig's List does indeed mirror blaming guns for crime as someone else mentioned.

Use Caution

A number of years ago, my son worked out a deal to buy a customized Toyota Supra from an individual selling it because he was out on bail and had a reporting date for a three-year prison term. I accompanied my son and we met at the seller's home, during daytime.

My son carried $17,000 cash and I carried two Glock 9mms, one in a shoulder rig and another on my hip. I pretty much stayed near the door, leaning against a wall and at no time did I allow anyone to get behind me (the seller had two friends present). It turned out to be a legitimate sale and I got to drive the baby home as at the time, my son did not know how to drive a stick shift. I should add that my senses were on high alert but I did not detect any warning signs of impending doom, in which case we would not have entered the seller's home.

Last car I sold FTF the buyer offered to pay me in cash. I said thanks but I would rather meet him at his bank. I met him there and watched him get the a check. I then signed bill of sale in the bank after he handed me his certified bank check. He was happy and so was I. He even commented that he did feel better after thinking about how we did it. Sometimes you just got to think about all the things that can go wrong ahead of time.

I liked the idea someone else used in--doing a face-to-face meeting at a PD parking lot. There is no way--id ever do a deal and go alone unarmed and meeting someone ive never met before.

My gal and I have modified the old saw to:

"A ton of prevention is worth an ounce of cure."

We live by this; it has never failed us.

That's terrible. We are allowed to live on an amazing planet, but unfortunately it's infested with sick people. It makes me angry.

But this reminds me of the "rent a cop" program that Amarillo PD (TX) has. Even though you carry, having a professional "backup" might be worth the investment. Especially if you meet strangers with cash or other valuables.

I learned about the "rent a cop" program since I inquired for support from the Amarillo PD. It was something like $35/30min with a 1 hour minimum. I'm not sure if other agencies offer this kind of service but I'm convinced it's a good thing.

I can't forget about the murder of Thomas and Jackie Hawks. The got killed while selling their yacht "Well Deserved" to their killers.

Imagine they would have had a cop on board. Or at least some more friends... sad.

My personal philosophy is:

I don't use Craigs List to buy anything I need. Period

Truthfully,I never think of the site for buying anything. However,I may have to use it if my deals fall through this Saturday.

This is also why you should have someone house-sit for you during a viewing or funeral.

Sometimein the late seventies or early eighties,my Uncle Billy passed away in Houston. While we were at the funeral home--my dad--who was armed--saw four black kids stealing the hubcaps off out caddie. How low can anyone get--to steal period--let alone--while people are grieving at the funeral home. The police were called--and all I remember hearing when they were talking tomy dad was--"Why didnt you fire a shot?" All my dad said is too many people were in the way.

You will not hear that question asked these days. BTW, Uncle Billy was a USN Captain in WWII-served on a Cruiser somewhere in the Pacific I think???
