On several occasions as of late I have seen reference to using a number 2 pencil to remove rust from tight places, like triggers and sights.
We are talking the pointy end right?
How is this done?

More than likely they were referring to the eraser. People use them to clean electrical contacts also like when the remote for the tv stops working because of battery connection.

Speaking of removing rust, I have a new-to-me Chief with rust freckles in the blueing. I've heard people talk about using a real fine steel wool to remove this, but it seems to me that no matter how fine the wool is it'd scuff up the blueing. The you'd have to touch up with oxpho or whatever & I've never had much luck making that look very good.

Use a good amount of gun oil with the fine steel wool. I have done it several times without damaging the finish. SOS pads will work as well.

ETA: A gun and reel cloth with a lot of elbow grease will remove really light rust. Usually just spots where it's starting to turn orange.

Steel wool should be 0000 fine to remove rust with some oil.
Some members will recommend bronze wool instead of steel wool.
SOS pads are #2 steel wool and I would not use those for anything besides scrubbing pots and pans.
Pencil and pen erasers contain an abrasive. While they will remove rust they also will remove the bluing if used aggressively.

Super or extra fine I forget how many 0000's and some oil is just fine. it will not scratch the bluing and just to freak out some more folks neither will Fliz and a soft rag.
