I have some grips that are J frame that belong to a S & W 38 Chiefs Special Airweight round butt. On the back of one side of the grip is either B 7 or 6 7 and 7 42. What does these number's stand for.

can you post a pic of both sides of the grips in question? if not, do they have a diamond around the grip screw? the prefix, if any, is not used on the grip stamping, so usually (always say that when dealing with s&w doings!), the number is all numerical. if it has diamonds, it shouldn't have a prefix, and is probably 67742 (1955ish?), and if it doesn't have diamonds, it is probably for gun number J67742 (1969-70ish).
