Wife is completing her RN and I'd like to get her a really nice, engraved stethoscope for Christmas. I understand that its hard to beat a Littmann, but the model choices are a little daunting to those of us not in the field. I'm thinking the Cardio model III, but could use suggestions. Thanks.

Will this be something she will be using for work or just as decoration around her neck?

I'd have to refer this question to my brother, the doctor.

Take two, call me in the morning.

My sister graduated nursing school two years ago and I bought her an engraved Littman Cardio. She loves it and uses it everyday. She works cardiac critical care so I went with the Cardio model. Not sure which would be best for your wife.

I have always used a Littmann...and now use the expensive Littmann Cardiology III. It is simply one of the absolute best out there.

With that comes a hefty price, around, or just under 200 bucks. The one I use now was 158.00, and I've had it for seven years.

There is no better scope out there.

Pro: Unusually fine sound, solid build, good customer service, enough ear pieces to fit just about anyone, comes in a rainbow of colors [which did not impress me, I use black, but the RN spouse changes colors about once every five years]. It can be engraved, and probably should be.

Con: Price. And...everyone knows that at work, you don't put it down anywhere, ever, 'cause it'll be gone in a New York minute, and hanging around the neck of one of your "peers" and gone forever!

There are some health care pro's who say that this scope is too much for anyone other than a doctor...which makes no sense to me, if you gotta hear, you gotta hear!

She will love it.

Len

PS I just checked and you can get one at Amazon for around 140 bucks, a real deal...

Sorry to say this, but don't do it! My daughter is a nurse and her husband is a doc. Both confirm that doctors are always accidentally walking away with nurses' stethoscopes. You'll just be adding stress to an already stressful environment.

Knowing my wife, that'd probably be the last walk the doctor would take -- accidentally or otherwise.;)

Another plus from my wife for the Littman Cardiology III. She got one quite a few years ago when she got her RN. She then moved up here to Michigan and forgot it over night in the car during the winter and the rubber tube cracked. Ordered the same model as a replacement as a special all black model. Also ordered a replacement rubber tube and fixed the old one for a back up. She swears by that model.

Thanks for the replies, everybody. Now I just have to choose a color. Think maybe Henry Ford was onto something with the options for the Model T.

Choose an unpopular/unique color for the Littman Cardio 111. One that is easy to spot from a distance. The LC 111 has a hi/lo freq bell that she'll find really useful for heart, lungs, and bowel sounds.

the most expensive isn't usually the best. My wife loves her Littman It looks the most like the Master Classic II, but the bell is a little bit different. I assume whatever it was (she is thinking it was a Cardio series) is out of production now or has been changed some. Don't get one with a dual head since the second bell will pick up ambient noise. long or dual run hoses also just seam to give more opportunity for the sound to dissipate.

If you really want to be nice, give her a cover for the stethoscope. The feel of fabric against your neck is much nicer that the stuff the scope tube is made out of. I usually just use the stockinette from work, because all of the covers seem to be oriented to kids and females.
