NY-1 model 60, real or fake?

Is the SN around BAA 71xx? If so, real. (Those marks look like the ones on my refurbed NY-1.)

mine doesn't have the crown stamp, the stamping "NY-1" is off a bit. I've read that this could have been because the no dash early guns were done on a desk somewhere at the nypd range versus proper stamping at the factory.

I was going to offer it as a trade to somebody but don't want to mislead them by passing off a fake instead of the real McCoy.

I recall Big Boku posted something about the stamping at the armorer's office - probably in one of those threads I linked above.

The AWP's I've seen include a 4-inch NY-1 M64-3, and 3 & 4-inch CS-1 M686s. I looks like that prefix was set aside for LEO use. I'd say it's legit.

The stamp is a silhouette, as I understand it this was stamped into the gun by the armourer when the gun was inspected. Now I cant recall if this inspection was when the heavy mainspring was installed or after to check the pins.

It looks pretty nice to me!:)

I currently have one with an AWP #, and had another with an AWP.
I would say yours is legit, but you can send the pics to BigBoku and get his input, he knows as much about these NY-1's as anyone.

60-2 NY-1 Ben Shostle engraved

Just happened on this old thread to find the photobucket photos gone. That's awful. Hope the OP can restore the pix. If the OPs is SN BAA71xx (not BAA71xxx as posted) I'd think you're OK. This one is BAA69xx

Here's what I have. From a Suffolk County, NY, Retired LEO, many years ago. Not my personal taste but Ben Shostle's deep cut engraving is just fantastic. The stocks are genuine MOP.

Thanks to member DenverDick who sent me a list of NYPD Model 60s returned to S&W from NYPD surplus, my 60-2, NY-1, is NOT on the list of those NYPD Model 60s returned to S&W.

If I remember correctly, Ben Shostle was either the first or one of the first engravers to do a deep cut engraving on a stainless steel revolver. He obviously maintained his lead in this field for many years until he passed in 2006.

If this post is correct Ben Shostle when blind some time before his death. See: My Grandfather's engravings | The Fedora Lounge
