It appears I may be buying a vehicle in FL and giving it to a daughter who lives in NY. Do any of you folks from NY know what sales taxes and/or transfer fees may be involved to register the vehicle in NY? Suggestions as to how to maybe minimize any registration fees?

I believe that a vehicle given as a legitimate gift from a parent to child is tax-exempt. Check with the DMV to be sure.

Thanks for the feedback. We were hoping to avoid the sales tax since it's a gift. I wish there was a consumer help line to call and ask at NY DMV but so far no joy in finding one.

There are a couple of possibilitys to avoid paying NYS sales tax upon registering,,or at least reducing the payment amount.

Go to this webpage:
NYS DMV - Vehicle Registration and Certificate of Title

Alot of info but a part of it deals with registering a veh in NY coming in from out of state and dealing with the sales tax issue, a veh given as a gift, sales tax already paid in another state, receipts needed, NYSDMV forms, etc. Also emission standards are gone over.

There's even a couple of phone#'s buried in there, but no promises when talking to the DMV!

Use the 'Search DMV' function on the top right hand side of the page to look up any of the forms or other things they mention.

Call this number 315-386-1408. That is the St. Lawrence County DMV office. They process many of the downstate registrations and will be actually helpful.
