Recently left NYC for greener pastures.. Perusing my old hometown paper when I come across this article:

NYPD to restart gun buyback program with 10 events across the city - NY Daily News

I look at the accompanying photo, and.. front and center, nice, blued Colt Python.. The deal is $200.00 bank card for a hand gun or "assault rifle," No questions asked..

I am all for taking illegal guns off the street, and if these programs work to curb the violence, more power.. The city needs to implement a system that actually works to target unlawful gun owners.. Curious to know what the NYPD does with all these firearms.. Curious to see who traded in their Python for a 200 dollar cash card.. Curious about the chain of events that took it from the Colt factory to where it finds itself today.. And where it goes from here.

Not sure what point I'm trying to make it.. Just a random little thought.

Maybe a dumb idea, but what if they gave out vouchers for safes to new gun owners? Keeps guns off the streets and out of the hands of children.

Wonder if they try to match of the guns to shell casings found at crime scenes.. And, yeah.. They are more likely to be looking for new holsters than rightful owners..

Is it $200 per gun? Is there any limit and do you have to be a NY resident? If not I've got a bunch of cheapos taken in over time that I'd LOVE to turn in for $200 each, even to be destroyed b/c they aren't really going to be missed.

I could drive to NY and cover gas with the first gun, make out great on the rest. I even promise to use the proceeds to order import guns so the net number of guns in the US doesn't decline. :) (insert evil laugh here)

Ask yourself how many "gangbangers" will be standing in line
to turn in their guns like the one who killed the kid pictured ?
It's just a grab for legally owned weapons and an easy way for
petty thieves who will take 200 for a gun they stole to get free
amnesty for their crime. Stupid is as stupid does.

If they are really serious about it, they should offer $1000 per gun and I would be glad to sell them plenty of mine for that price. Nothing worse than a cheap buy back program.

The state has become nothing more than a legal fence. A nice place to dump a stolen gun for cash.

Gun buy backs break the law. They did not sell the guns so how can it be a buy back. Take in stolen guns never trace them cull the good stuff melt the junk. No one gets stolen property back. No criminals taken off the street. That ought to speak volumes as to motives of buy backers. Anti rights gun haters out for show getting a pass from Leo. Why? You want to know how a python ends up at a buy back? Husband dies, wife didn't care for guns and or was afraid of them. She wasn't smart enough or maybe some gun counter jerk intimidated her so that she never found out the value and "just wanted it out of here". Nightly news doing its job, trampling the second while standing on what they think is theirs alone first. Oh yea I got something against buy backs. Phony get the bad old guns off the streets. How about jail some criminals, they can't even keep drugs and shives and cell phones out of jail, jail for heavens sake.

I can't imagine any legal gun owner in NYC participating in this program. I think it costs somewhere around $400 in paperwork just to initiate the process of attempting to obtain a firearm license.. (You can get turned down if you fail any of the control points along the way.) From what I understand, you just walk in, hand over your beautiful Python, and claim your $200 bank card..

Well sure you can;) They will just arrest you at the boarder and take those guns for free.;)

Pops buys a Python in 1968 for $125. Puts it up on a shelf, never even looks at it. Pops dies, momma finds said Python with $125 sales receipt in the bos. Runs down to the NYPD buyback, gets rid of that nasty old gun, and cashes out for a nice profit (in her head). Joe

Yeah, the tiny hitch in my otherwise flawless plan for world domination, or at least my plan for getting $200 for a Phoenix Raven.

Trying to remember but I think it was in Missouri they had one and a guy organized his gun club group to get all their complete junk together and dump it on the buyback program.

They even admit in the story it's about getting guns that "could be stolen", so they aren't getting them from criminals, just from law abiding folks. There are only two kinds of guns to such people: guns in the hands of criminals and guns at risk of being in the hands of criminals.
