If you're looking for a nylon sock with a retention strap, I'd suggest you think again. I've seen too many drop guns out of them on the range. A good molded leather or kydex holster is far superior in retention when you want it to stay in and drawing when you want it out.. I use Safariland holsters for 686s.
Uncle Mike's used to make some very good nylon holsters. I have some I've been using for many years. They perform very well in spite of some "purist" remarks. I have a bushel of Bianchi/Safariland/Kramer etc holsters. Use any of them for a long time and the belt welt will stretch causing the holster to flop around. Also leather on leather (holster on belt) will squeak and make all kinds of racket when worn if not oiled regularly. Not good when hunting. And a well fitted leather holster(tight) will wear the bluing off a blued gun faster than nylon........Nylon is not pretty but functions in all weather and is noiseless.
I have several kydex holsters I that use with 1911's. All are friction fit. ALL will wear the finish off both sides of the front of the slide in short order if you use them a lot.
There are two general classes of nylon holsters: the el-cheapos and those made of molded ballistic nylon by established and known firms such as Uncle Mike's. It should be noted that most of the tactical holsters used by swat/entry teams are indeed nylon.
