Observations From a Trained Observer

[THE PILGRIM]

One day I stopped up on the Rio Jemez about 60 miles NW of town. We stopped at a river side picnic area to eat some lunch. It was an absolutely beautiful day! The sun was shining, the birds were singing, the Rio Jemez which is a small rapidly flowing stream was splashing over the rocks.
I was on the second half of my sandwich when I started to notice this little bird. It really didn't look like much, just a small gray brown bird. It was what it was doing that attracted my attention. It was flying rock to rock. When it landed on a rock it would walk down the side of the rock underwater. It would reappear , shake off the water and fly to the next rock. Repeat the disappearing act. I had to watch it several times before I really believed it. This bird was feeding underwater! When I got home I looked it up and it of course the American Dipper. Just goes to show that there are things out there you haven't yet seen.

I fish many rivers in western Washington and everyone has Dippers...I never get tired of watching them...especially when the fish aren't biting...
