odd question on a 64 3"

I have a 64 3" that the serial # is not on the bottom of the grip frame but is on the left side of the frame just below the cylinder. I have never seen this before. Why would it be there?

Pictures! Pictures! Pictures! Maybe the original S.N. was obliterated and the gun was re-serialed????? did the gun pass the checks when you took possesion of it? Who knows. Are we sure the gun is a S&W? Ask the people where you got the gun.

FOUND IT:
The gun is an NY-1 and was done to accomidate a request for the NYCPD. Page 226, 3 ed. SCSW.
 
It is a NY-1, made for NYPD. Here's one of mine:
