Yesterday, while gun surfing, I ran across a beautiful pre M19 in excellent condition with original diamond center target grips. Opening bid was a tad over $600 and I don't think there was a reserve. Getting ready to jump this puppy, I scrolled down to discover that the previous owner had engraved his social security number inside the window on the bottom by the cyl. stop. Holy **** Batman!!! A possible $1,500 revolver reduced to a shooter. The search goes on. Big Larry:mad::mad::(:(

The previous owner was just making it easy for the crooks. Steal his gun and info to steal his identity at the same time. Shame.

I have a feeling this was done prior to 1960 when it was generally accepted to inscribe SS numbers on TV's and personal items. Too do it now, would most certainly be stupid. Well, it really was stupid back then. Why do you suppose they put serial numbers on guns? Especially the ones with XXX's. Big Larry

Would a pre 19 be a Combat Magnum? Just checking. Kinda tired of the whole "pre" thing.

I only buy shooters, so the moron's SS# on the bottom of the cylinder window would be a minor concern. Not visible unless I open it, so not a deal breaker if the price was right (and $600 would not be right for me).
 
Over the years I have seen this a lot -- I well remember when the local Police loaned out engraving pens for just this purpose -- I have three guns in my colletion with SS nr's on them -- I still love them and shoot them but I don't try to sell them
 
and in a spot that would make fairly easy enough to remove, we've seen them ALL over any given firearm, mainly on the backstrap and inside the frame ,under the grips...when on the sides 'ouch'........
 
If the gun was otherwise nice, I'd buy it and have the "engraving" removed. Not much refinishing involved, I'd guess.

Hi Merril. You know me. If it ain't right, I am not a player. I have a minty M19 no dash and am still looking for a Combat Magnum that used to be called a pre M19 a long time ago, in another galaxy. You also know me well enough to know I WILL find just the right revolver. Big Larry:):):):):):)
 
Saw an almost mint Colt Lightning in .38 Colt once. Case colors still nice and strong, 3 inch barrel, no ejector rod.

Gramps had been broken into so he got the police "loaner" engraver and engraved his stuff with his SSN. On the pistol he engraved his SSN on the BARREL!!!

He wasn't my Gramps but a friends.
 
I picked up a 19-3 6" nickel from a retired state tropper- it was an evidence gun and they engraved the guys name and case # right on the side plate.
Still a great gun but all collector value is gone- nice conversation piece though.
