Yaggi wine-cured Swiss cheese, from Dover, Ohio. This is the best Swiss cheese you will ever eat. One of my earliest memories is a bout of carsickness where I puked a load of this stuff over the seat back into the front seat. My folks remembered this incident as long as they lived.

Pop used to give us big blocks of this stuff for Christmas. I was feeling nostalgic last week, and went on line to see if it could still be had.

Over the phone, Mrs Yaggi did not particularly recommend cheese from this batch, as it didn’t keep well, molding over quickly after opening. It tasted ok, but I would only have a couple of days to eat it. She said the packing and shipping was a little steep for only one pound of cheese, so I took a couple of wheels of baby Swiss, too, to defray the cost.

It came today. I will open it soon, but only when I have a few people around to help eat it. The baby Swiss should keep ok.

Even with Wisconsin right next door, I will not hesitate to say that the best Swiss cheese comes from Ohio.

Oh man, that looks GOOD! Wish we could get that.

I usually just buy some cheap Swiss cheese and a box of wine. Eat the cheese, wash it down with copious quantities of wine, and let it cure in my belly. I keep a bucket handy in case it elicits the reaction you had as a child. :D

When I was living in Ohio and rode motorcycle we would take a "cheese run" to Amish country. We didn't call it a cheese run but I can't say here what we called it. We would get cheese and trail bologna which we ate at a road side picnic area. The Amish were known for making great tasting cheese.

The other great delicacy in Amish country is pickled tongue sandwiches. I don’t know that it is Amish per se, but that is where we would find them, in little country taverns. Thinly-sliced white bread with butter and sliced tongue. The flavor of the brine made mustard unnecessary.

I never got to ride a motorcycle through there, but one trip we had two rental cars, x-bodies, a Buick and an Oldsmobile, identical except for the paint and nameplates. One car was for smokers, the other non-. My brother and I pushed those cars nose to tail through the little crooked roads, leaving a lot of rubber on the asphalt. We had a beer with every sandwich, but that was only three sandwiches, so I guess we brought the crazy with us.

They must have edited out the part where he washes his old dirty socks in the milk to get that “heavenly” aroma ;)
Like many agricultural villages in Switzerland, the one I lived in had a dairy co-op that made and sold cheese. It was at the end of my street, at the place where I caught the tram. Like most places there, it was immaculate and I never caught a whiff of anything malodorous.

One exception is during the last week of September, about 350,000 Swiss dairy animals are moved down to the valleys from the alpine pastures, passing through towns along the way and dropping cow pie "deposits" in the street.

I've had Swiss where it was sliced with a thick knife and almost seemed to crumble.
Others would almost cut with a spoon. All sorts in between.
Mild? Sharp? Baby? Not sure which is which.
I'll eat it all though I'd like to know which goes with what.
Cheese goes with anything and everything except ice cream.

Every now and then I get tied of the store bought chees and go down to the
little German place in town that serves lunch and dinner but also has the old style
meat and cheese deli unit that lets you duel at all the goodies on hand.

I just had the butcher wrap three samples of white cheese for me to try.
No names given but it is on the package for when the wife tries it out.
Plus a blueberry strudel cup, for her to snake on.

A real plus if your town has these little Jems............
