Location
Arnold, Missouri
Heres the setting; Out walking in the Mark Twain National Forrest, doing a little scouting. Probably > 2 miles from a road or trail. I know where a pond is and was scouting for deer sign. Found this located about 20 yards from the pond and maybe 4' higher in elevation. It is @ 2'x2' square, @ 15" deep. The knife on the ground is my Benchmade auto.

We have all the usual critters around, deer, bobcat, hogs, bears, cougars and the occasional Bigfoot. Some cattle do occasionally wander through, but this is something new to me. I'm thinking animal because there was no tree or shrub uprooted in the area, no sign of any disturbance other than the hole. Also, the dirt from the hole was gone.

My friend who was with me thinks it was from deer digging at a mineral spot, either man made or natural. The location (to me) says natural, as a man would have had to tote that block aways.

Oh, and it wasn't there last year.

Opinions?

+1 on being a mineral lick.....I would guess manmade since it wasn't there before. Wouldn't have to be a large block carried in, could have been a small amount of granulated mineral and then mixed into the dirt so it is absorbed. Just my guess.

I was thinking a Muskrat warren but 20 yards from the pond is pretty far for them to dig, normally those holes would be only a few feet from the pond.

Somone with a metal detector found something.

Sinkhole most likely
Doubt it is a major discovery or huge mystery. If close to water aka pond likely a sinkhole ground water does strange things.

Could this be a "seep"?

If this water is higher than the pond maybe water is draining underground into the pond. It's not uncommon for water to move sideways 60 feet with 4 feet of rise to propel.

Silt is moving to the pond. That will eventually-through erosion and depositing, create equilibrium between the 2 locations. Could explain missing dirt. That area looks ripe for good prints if it were attracting deer.
