OK, Welcome to Georgia

Well, I got my new license in Georgia the home of grocery taxes and taxes on clothing. I never heard of such things. RI only has a prepared meal tax, but no tax on anything that would be purchased to make the same meal

They just get it back somewhere else. It's like a shell game. In Mississippi pensions are not taxed but most everything else is, especially car tags.

I am amazed at how much taxes have been collected with the inflation that has been going on these last few years.

Yep...when I start my car up it chirps a few times and says X ban K ban KA band, and laser. Then it says GPS connected. Had it in a 2019 Rav4.

No idea why it didn't alert me. Around ATL there was a cop pulled off the road standing beside his car using a laser gun. My detector went nuts.

Son has top of the line detector and is invisible to LEO tracking, has saved him many times.

I'm not trying to make a political statement, this is just an historical fact to show what changed. Seemingly forever (at least over my life, and I'm old!) WV was a Democrat run State, you know blue collar, working class, union, etc. But when the Democrat party shifted far left, and the people of WV values remained the same, they found themselves essentially being Republicans, and that party has been in control for a while now.
I have to hand it to our State government because they have been doing what they can to lower or eliminate a few taxes w/o increasing others.

Individual Personal Property tax; yeah we have it at the County level, most call it the "car/truck tax" because that's what individuals mostly are assessed on. It funds County schools so Counties can't get rid of it.
BUT the State will now be picking up that cost! We still pay the tax to our Counties but then it comes off our State income tax as a credit (not deduction).

Income tax; the max rate was just over 6% and you reached that max pretty low. The max was just dropped to 5.12%. Not much but going the right direction, and further drops are expected over the next few years.

State sales tax is 6%. But the State did permit towns to add on up to 1% if they choose.

LOL but then they took it completely off guns and ammo.

Use tax on the purchase of new and used cars, trucks, motorcycles, is 6%.

Gasoline tax is .36 which compared to neighboring states is higher than VA and KY but lower than OH and MD, and much lower than PA's .58.

Property tax on your personal home and property is pretty low, but is double that rate on rental and commercial property.

RIDEWV, I recently purchased 50ac way south of you in Greenbrier Co. I've had two interactions with local govt. My property assessment showed a 20x30 pole barn and 10x12 shed which I was being taxed on. Those buildings are long gone. I called the county assessor's office and spoke to an appraiser. I told him the buildings are long gone. His reply was " no problem sir, I'll get that removed today". I can only imagine how it would have went in NY. I've been reassessed here 3 times in 6 yrs. Value raised $100k. My other interaction was with a State Trooper. A different property I looked at had a small camper on it that seller was not willing to remove and had no title for. I asked what the process was to remove it. Trooper says, just haul it to the junkyard. I asked about not having title. He says if you own the land you own the camper. Haul it to the junkyard. In NY you cannot junk a vehicle without a title. They say there's a way but nobody could ever tell me the way.

FWIW having lived in several states and commonwealth the govt. is going to get you one way or the other in "taxes". There are charts available online( for what thats worth)that show " total costs" of taxes in each state and commonwealths. At my age I look for good medical care ,not much cold weather and good gun regulations. Finding good places to eat can be a real challenge and grocery stores vary a lot.

What model does he have?

May be time to upgrade my R7.

He's not sure of mdl. but its a pricy Escort. He lucked out when buying as they all look the same in the store. He picked one that was $400 but when got to register it rang up as $700 but manager gave it to him for $400 as it was last one and was in wrong spot in display.

Taxes suck, I don't care what state you are in they stick it to you any way they can.

Watching these underqualified local politicians beg for money for necessary services LE Fire Dept etc. then spend the money like drunken sailors on everything but what the levy's were passed for irritates me to no end.

Next thing ya know they need more money, or they are going to stop bussing layoff LE or Firemen etc. but they always find money for a new roundabout etc.

Rant over......

If you want to learn about excessive state & local taxation and over regulation, just move to California. U-Haul has great rates because they need more trailers and trucks there. I may begin specializing in companies pulling out of California.

Yeah I imagine Greenbrier county is pretty easy to deal with, most counties in WV seem to be. The one I'm in is as well, no permits needed or inspections for anything, except when putting in a septic tank or aeration system. As far as removing buildings (that aren't there) from property assessment that should be easy, they can just get on google earth and check. Of course that's also how they catch the new one you put up that you "forgot to declare" as well. :)
