old 38 spl H.E.

traded for this in august just got a photo of it up here. I believe it is a 4th model H.E. target model. It shoots great and has a wonderful trigger pull. I think it is pre ww2 the sn is 5061xx.

The serial puts it 1924/25, I think, but definitely 1927 or before due to the knob. The stocks are actually even earlier, 1910-to-1920 recessed medallion style.

5061xx suggests your Target Model M&P likely shipped in 1925. The grips on it are from the 1910-20 period and not original to the revolver. Period-correct grips will have no medallions. Target Model M&Ps (those with adjustable sights) are somewhat unusual.

This is a picture of the grip style (the M&P is from 1926). But no real reason to go out and find a pair. Those on it now are in better than average condition for their period and are likely to be worth more.

I don't know much about Target models. Comparing Guy's gun to the OP's and looking at the front sight blade, were there different styles available or were they cut to order?

Most of the guns I have seen from this era had the tall, thin blade that is on the gun I posted. The rear notch was a small U, IIRC. I no longer have the gun. But, like most things S&W there were options like the Paine and Patridge.

5061xx is waay too high for a pre WW II N


Your revolver does appear to be a 2nd Model .44 Special Target. The front sight could be a replacement. The 4th model .44 targets were built on the post WW II short action and had a rib on the barrel.

The caliber rollmark is a bit tough to read on my monitor, but this sure looks more like a M&P Target than a .44 HE 2nd.

Closest I can get to you is a non-target 4th change s/n 535896 which shipped in April 1926.
