I took my Marlin Cowboy to the range today trying out some different loads for a potential deer hunt. The load that absolutely shot the best for me today is a box that was loaded in the 80's for a Ruger Blackhawk. 13gn of 4756 with a 230gn JHP Norma projectile. I want to duplicate the load but first want to verify that it's in current specs. I've struck out finding it in current published data. This load was given to me by someone who is long dead so I can't ask where he got the data. Is this in a load range any of your are familiar with? I will say it has a little more thump than the other ammo I was shooting but no pressure signs.

That load is very close to one of my old Speer load manuals

but it was not for a 230 JHP

so you will need to get printed data, since that is a full load in the Colt.

My question is, "Where are you getting 4756?" Isn't it discontinued? I'm hoarding my remaining stash of 4759 which is also discontinued. I use it for 32-40 off hand loads for Schuetzen.

Lyman #45 lists a 45 Colt load with a 235gr Cast bullet made with #2 Alloy.
They report using a Remington 2 1/2 primer
Loads velocity is from a 5 1/2" barrel
9.0gr SR 4756 for 634 fps
12.8gr SR 4756 for 1008 fps

I'm fairly sure SR 4756 was discontinued in 2014 along with SR 7625

Thanks all! I didn't think to check my Lyman 45, probably because I was looking online hoping for data from this century :-D. I sill have an unopened can of 4756 so can load up some duplicate loads until I find a replacement cast load. I would actually prefer a cast load for hunting but these JHP loads shot so well....

Some of us old timers still might have a few containers of old powders, that are collecting dust.

I am on my last pound of SR4756 and am saving it for my .357 magnum loads
where it does its best magic in fps and accuracy.

When gone, I will have three other powders that can meet its fps and shoot nice groups, that I grade at a A-.

Yep,discontinued in 2014. Everytime I see an unopened canister of 4756 and 7625, it comes home with me. I have a very good supply. 7625 is used for target/plinking loads in 38sp. 4756 is used in normal/hot loads in 38sp, 357M, 40S&W, 10mm, 44M. For the pistol loads, 4756 burns very clean and velocities are high. For the revolver loads, 4756 burns very clean (as opposed to the dirty 2400) and I can attain higher velocities than I should be able to attain without any pressure signs.

Regarding 4756 and 7625... I don't think these powders were ever very popular and I'm not sure why. I used 4756 about fifty years ago for .38 Special loads. When I started working with the 9mm and cast bullets almost thirty-five years ago, I used about a dozen powders and the same number of bullet designs. 4756 and 7625 were among the powders, both of which worked well.

I think many who started handloading in only the last twenty or thirty years probably never heard of these powders. Again, the lack of popularity probably had a great deal to do with their discontinuance.

Off topic a bit, but 7625 was my all-time favorite for 20-gauge skeet loads. Of course it was discontinued. We switched over to Universal and International, which for all practical purposes must be "discontinued." No one seems to have seen any of either for at least a couple of years.

As others I have posted, I used 4756 in .38 Special full-charge loads with complete satisfaction. If anyone had made me King, both of those powders would still be in production.

For an all around carry load in my 41 magnum (model 58 ) I found that 7.5 grs of 7625 with the Berry's 210 plated bullet made a great , accurate load . Probably about like 8.0 grs of Unique . Years past I used a lot of 4756 in 44 magnum loads with complete satisfaction . Regards Paul

@oldman10mm,
I wasn't doubting you or anyone else has any of the 3 SR powders left. I was replying to a post saying the powder was discontinued "probably 5 years ago." I was just clarifying when it was discontinued. I also have some powders in my stock which are currently no more like many reloaders here.

Seeing those pictures makes me a little jealous to tell the truth lol. 15lbs of SR 4756 is one heck of a stash. I'm not crying because I don't see any SR 4759 which I would just love to have right now... ;)

Don't pick gnats like that with me, cousin toad! He said the wanted to duplicate loads from the eighties, suggesting he would be doing it currently.
See you at the next amphibian family reunion! :D

I feel left out here...
Maybe I should change my name to ArchAngel-BF (Bull Frog lol)

No problem, AA. This family probably needs a new Guardian Angel. I notice the one we've got has been looking pretty peaked of late. If you're willing, you can have the job and welcome!
