About a 1947 pontiac fast back model I think. Anywhere between a 1946 and a 1948. If I am wrong its still a GM model, maybe olds but pontiac is my best guess. Chev had the body too. I had a 46 chev but not in the fast back. Had a uncle who had a pontiac that looked just like that but cant make out that emblem. They shared the same body.

Merril is close. It's a 1948 (give or take a year) Buick Special.

I stand corrected, db is almost right, it's a 1947 Buick Special. The bumper is right, the chrome fender strips are right and the emblem and taillight is right.

I will guess it is a 1948 Buick, as it looks like a car my 4th grade art teacher had when I was in grade school except his was black.

It's a 1946 Buick. Tail lights and trunk emblem match this one.
The guy in the picture is my Dad. He's still in uniform and mustered out in 10/1945. So, this picture was probably taken shortly after the 1946 models came out.

I think it is a 41 Buick, which essentially is the same thing as the post war Buicks.
Look and the fender trim on the picture and compare it to this picture of a 41

Note that the fender trim is two heavy streaks and they are absent on the front fenders. Also the bumper guards are a little heavier and sculpted on the 46. You can also see the raised chrome trim on top of the fenders for the turn signals which are smaller on the 46

It can't be as early as '41 because it's got internal trunk hinges. The hinges are external on a '41:
Edit: Or maybe not. I'm finding some with and some without visible hinges. The more I look at photos of these cars, I'm beginning to believe it's impossible to nail down the year precisely based on the single photo we have. There were so many different Buick models and variations back then and they all look pretty much the same for almost the entire decade.
I think the best that can be said with certainty is that it's a Buick from sometime in the 1940s. Figuring there's a good chance it's a new car skeezix's father purchased shortly after discharge in '45, it's likely a mid-decade model.

It looks like the fastback body styles had internal hinges, the other series had the external hinges.

Nope, the 41 that you show is missing the bumper guards. The key is the rear fender trim. 42 had two chrome strips, 41 had the flying sideways U. The main ID would be the front fender. If it flowed into the doors, it would be 42 on.

I think you are right - '41 it is. Still a tough car to find. Maybe the bumper guards are optional or only found on certain models.

If you look at it closely, there are vertical bumber guards. The driver side is pretty rusted but they passenger side is viewable. They are straight tapered without the three vertical lines.
The bumper shape also matches the OP's picture; a slight wrap around fairly straight bumper.
