Old dog, new trick(s)

I am old fashioned and don't have a hand held phone but I did see on the net where

the landline might be replaced by the VoIP (voice internet whatever) thing that is out and one site rate was 19.99 a month, if that is a good price ?

If you need to reach me, phone, send a letter, E-mail or better yet, come to the house.

Jack, I'm sure that you know that if you tap the little microphone symbol on the bottom row of keys when your text screen is up...(between the globe and space bar)... You can simply speak you text, and the letters just pop up on the screen. If you are having trouble with dexterity this might help.

Best Regards, Les

I use Republic voip, I'm pleased with it. Unlimited voip through my WiFi and unlimited cell service when I'm not in a usable WiFi range for$13 monthly.

I text often, Usually to check in with others or to have them give me a call at their convenience.

The day I retired, my uncle, who lives 3 blocks from me, said that we needed to call or text each other every morning, so that we would know that each other was OK. And we have done it. But in deference to my old school upbringing, I text with full words, capitalization and punctuation. That way my uncle knows that not only am I alive but I am vested with my faculties. It is one of the first things I do each morning.

I love that story and I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who uses;) full words capitalization and punctuation. I think my typos are enough of a challenge with out adding to the problem by leaving out punctuation and using abbreviations. But that's just me.

Welcome to the brave new world Jack. :D

Thank you. It's kinda scary for now but getting a little better every day. I am hopeful for the future. I look back on my first day in typing class, my first day with a cell phone and my first time to use a computer and realize how far I've come with all that since then. If I look ahead another 22 years I expect I'll be a real whiz with the i-phone. :D

We both have trackphone flip phone cell phones for emergency use. Past that it is these two at the house.

The one in the kitchen room/dining room area. I admit to wanting to pick it up and ask Sarah to connect me with Juanita at the diner while I have one bullet in my pocket. :)

I've carried a cell phone for several years now. And I've been texting for a good while, as my sons have preferred text to phone call for years. But I've avoided the smartphone. Until this year....

I'm still battling the dang thing. But the salesgirl actually asked to see my old blackberry phone. One big problem I had was my old phone would not "connect/talk" to my new one. So I had to enter each & everyone of my contacts by hand into my new phone. PITA!

I embraced home computers when they were a novelty and had one in my home before any of my friends. I consider myself to be pretty much computer literate. And yet I'm of the opinion that the world would be a better place if cell phones had never been invented.

I have a cell phone and a monthly plan that costs me $23 for unlimited talk and text. It has a limited data plan but I don't care as I never use the phone as a computer. I have a desktop with a nice big monitor for that purpose.

I don't use my phone much at all but when I do I prefer text to talk. The reason being that I'm hard of hearing and some people talk so fast and mumble (IMO) to the point that I can't understand what they are saying on the phone and I get tired of asking them to repeat themselves only to still not get what they are saying.

When I text it is with full words and punctuation as I abhor text speak and find it just as bad as trying to understand a mumbler talking.

My friends know it's pointless to call me as I don't carry my phone most of the time but if they leave a text I'll respond eventually.

We both have cell phones, no land line. I text, take photos, do FB but it is a handy tool and nothing more. I think I have 40 friends on FB, and actually connect with a few, mostly family. I have so many things on FB blocked that I have been accused of having a "secret" account.

My wife and oldest daughter did a sneaky on my at Christmas. The conspired and gifted me a Android tablet. I had mentioned several times that I would like to have one that I could put all my songs and music in one place that was portable and the print was large enough to read. I am really enjoying it. I have the songs, some good music, the Youversion Bible and a few photos of my wife. It can only connect to the world through wifi and I keep it in "airplane" mode most of the time.

Enjoy your new found technology, but do let it dominate your day.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

I have a Facebook account so us fuddies get to see picts of the grandkids. No one wants to know what I ate for breakfast. I keep my flip-phone within reach and it is my Oh Shoot! plan if I end up on the floor. I can text if I am sat at a table and can put the thing down but why? I'm ok with getting texts. I have phone numbers for everyone I know in my flippy-cell, no name, no answer... leave a message.
Our old school answering machine has a message... "If you are not a SCAM, speak your name and leave a message. If you are a SCAM, hang up now." (I do review the call log to see if anyone we actually know.) called

Thank you for your kind words. With only a few years exception, for the last about 35 years my aunt and uncle and I have lived in the same towns and they have looked after me for decades. And a couple times when for some reason I was a little late in the morning calling or texting I got a text from my uncle asking if I was awake and OK. Now I look after them when their children can't come up to do something for them that has to be done immediately.
