old frames

I wonder if anyone might have any idea where I might buy just the frame for a Model 686?

Since the frame is the gun, due to serial #, it would seem S&W would be the source.

Usually what you find or have, is a parts kit from a stolen gun.. the frame is long gone..

To have all the parts, less the frame, is likely a gun "destroyed" for some reason. Crime gun, forfeit, military, certain agencies specify destruction , "buy back"... etc. Sometimes they are stripped for parts before destruction.
The thing is, a lot of parts are not drop in & need to be fitted to a particular frame. Unless you have tools and advanced gunsmith / armorer skills... It'll likely cost you more than a good used gun will cost.
No S&W will not sell you a stripped frame.

Gunbroker is probably your best best. Frames with most, some, or no parts show up occasionally. In my opinion they bring way too much money. I think guys buy them thinking they can build one cheap. Unless you have a bunch of parts laying around and know what you are doing, it is unlikely.

I always watch out for frames on gun broker but they always sell high.
