Old gun update.

I posted this gun when I bought it a while ago. It was sitting in my old departments evidence room and was auctioned off to a LGS. It appears to have been a 6 or 8 inch model 27 that had it's barrel cut to 4 inches and the original partridge sight re-installed.

The gun had been in a storage locker for some time and looked like it had been pulled off the deck of a shipwreck. I wish I had taken some before pictures. I cleaned off the flaky rust and was pleased with it, but it was not pretty. I then began working with a local gunsmith who is doing Duracoat finishes and it was one of a couple of things I did some practice on.

I think it turned out ok. It's a blast to shoot. I get some mixed reactions to it. Some like it, some think I should be examined for doing this to an old 27.

If they charge you with desecration, they can nail me for accessory after the fact. A few years ago I bought a 1966-built 10-5, square butt, standard tapered 4" barrel, factory stocks. Wonderful shape mechanically, and it had been given a professional matte-to-semi-gloss black coating--Dura-Coat? Black-T? No idea, but it looks fine and seems durable. I think I got a good price on the gun because people were put off by the coating. Doesn't bother me; I put a Tyler T-Grip on it and it makes a fine head-of-the-bed piece.

We may differ on the coating---but I do like folks to be innovative and unusual when they get to doing projects.
The---er--grips could be changed--get some EZ grips and dura-coat them---maybe in sand color.

I know the grips are......unattractive......

But, what else is there?

I know the rubber is horrible. Still, it kind of fits. I first put a set of "previously enjoyed" wood targets on it, and it looked like I was trying to make it pretty. It's not pretty.

It's a good outcome for an old warhorse. I think you've done right by the old girl!

I don't like rubber grips on blue or nickel guns but I think it's a good choice for yours. You might want Pachmyers if you can find them, or S&W logo Hogues.......

When you have a working gun with a destroyed exterior, extreme measures are permitted. That is a fine reclamation solution.

I realize it is a working gun, so you might not feel comfortable putting some classic stocks on it. But you could consider some Ahrends combats (not terribly expensive), or if the spirit moves you, some straight-grip Fuzzy Farrants (definitely more expensive in this day and age). They look a little unusual, but they feel good in the hand.

Yes. Pachs would be an upgrade from what you have now. I believe I have some Pachmayr Presentation stocks for an N frame around here. If you want them, send me a PM and I'll mail them to you.

Hey...you saved a gun that was apparently rusting away and perhaps on it's way to some scrap heap to be parted out. So...good job!!! It's fun to save the abused ones and give them life again. I agree that Pachmayrs would look better.

There's nothing wrong with nice checkered wooden grips, and good ones are worth what you have to pay for them. But there's nothing wrong with Hogues, either. Guy Hogue knew more about designing grips than anybody S&W allowed to influence them (they did have Walter Roper working for them once, and, I think, Matheis Gagne's son, but I don't think they were soliciting their opinions on grips).

Grips are for holding, aiming, and firing a pistol, and whatever works best is what IS best. For many hands, the only thing that beats Hogue rubber is Hogue wood, and I'm not even sure about that.

I'm starting to like the looks of that revolver. I have to tell you at first sight that was not what came to mind. I wonder if some one makes a sand color set of grips for an N frame? Or Camo? Well you could just leave it like it is since the more I look at it the more I like it. If the bullets come out that hole in the front what more can you ask.

Those grips are just fine. I have the same ones on my 4" 686, which is what I used for duty. This was before they came out with the "rubbery" version. For me they fit and feel the best and the result is a much more controllable .357. I've never been a big fan of the Pachmayr's on a magnum, they just don't feel right to me. Nothing wrong with them, just not for me!
