old guns, new guns, old eyes...need "forward assist"

This is a great idea, and I should have thought of it, because I did something similar when I had my cataract surgery last year. Just buy a cheap set of reader clip-ons from your local drug store, and remove the lens from the non-dominant eye side. Same basic principal for under $20. ;)

It's worth a shot, Rodan. I tried that approach, but found for my vision the weakest clip-ons at 1.5 diopter were too strong. I could focus at reading distance, but not out there just beyond the front sight. I found the 0.75 diopter clip-ons from ShootingSight were perfect.

I'm sure I created a puzzlement at Walgreens. Some guy trying on readers, sticking his arm out and trying to focus on his thumb. Not your average customer. But it told me what I needed to know; and saved me $5.95.

LOL... you're not the 1st. :p

1.5 is perfect for me for a 4-6" K frame shooting offhand... I've been using full lens reader safety glasses, but they're obviously cumbersome when not actually shooting. I'll pick up some clip-ons and try them next time out.

Can’t remember when I started shooting. Best memory is 60+ years ago.
Shotguns had gold beads or ghost ring sights. Rifles had gold beads, peep sights or scopes. All pistols 3 dot sights or front sight painted with Testor’s bright yellow paint if didn’t have three dot system. On all revolvers used the yellow paint on front sights.

NOW at 70+ I still use the above system (bright yellow paint on front sights) except on rifles. All have had scopes the past 50+ years. Today without a rifle scope it’s “what front Sight?”.
Color of front sight on pistol/revolver depends on what YOUR eye picks up best.
