I have a pair of ivory grips acquired from an estate sale. They appear to be for a #3 but do not seem right for any that I have tried. They fit a Frontier DA except for being about 1/4" too long. Does anyone know what they could be for?

I'm no help. I can't think of a frame that has, in addition to the grip screw holes, two other locating holes as well as the bottom edge hole. My guess is that these grips were fitted to several frames over the years.

I would suspect they are not even S&W. Dozens of round-butt revolver manufacturers and hundreds of models were around in those early days. Unfortunately they are so worn that have little to no value as gun stocks.

The .44DA and the K round butt are almost identical. They're both the same overall length and width. Only difference is the bottom corners are a little bit sharper on the DA. Unless these fit one of the earlier American or Russian models (which I'm not familiar with), they aren't for any Smith. The New Model #3 Single Action has a grip that's larger in all dimensions.

Neat old grips. I agree they could have originated on countless antique revolvers possibly even a single shot. That would be my guess from the very narrow profile.

Sellers often associate parts with a Smith & Wesson origin to get more BANG for their Buck! It don’t make it true.

Thanks guys. I did find a New Model #3 to try and they do fit. A bit narrow but that may be lateral shrinkage over 140 years in the dry SW. I also tried them on a RB K frame and they are similar but the top doesn't fit.

cwneely2, interesting New Model 3 revolver. Is it a New Model 3 target revolver in 32-44 with serial number below 550?
The rear target sight on your gun is scarce. About 1/2 the early New Model 3 target guns had the rear fixed target sight replaced with an adjustable one.
