Old M&P SN question

Not so run of the mill.
What you have is an "S" series post war M&P, they were manufactured between 1945 and 1948. S999xxx was the last so yours is a late one. Someone will stop by and give you a more accurate date.
There's a lot of interest in them here on the forum, more from the variations as they evolved into what became the Model 10.
I have 2, they're great shooters.

I'm in the midst of a research project on these. I'll be getting in touch with you to ask some questions, but I'll wait until I see photos - that way you won't have to answer so many questions.
S914xxx probably shipped in the late spring or early summer of 1947.
S prefix M&P revolvers started shipping in March, 1946, and ran out sometime late in the year 1948. C prefix guns were first shipped in March, 1948, but there was overlap in ship dates because S&W never shipped in serial order.
I have one S prefix gun in my database that shipped in August, 1949. I doubt I will ever find a later one.
BTW, the 5" was the second most common length, behind the 4". In my opinion, the 5" is the better of the two for balance, looks and performance.
Here's a photo of the 5" example in my collection. Yours probably has a smaller extractor rod knob on it. It also probably has a pressed hammer pivot stud. The one in the picture has a threaded stud. You can see the end of it just below the cylinder release.

From my list, I'd guess S914xxx at June, possibly July, 1947 as a shipping date. Anyway, mid-1947.
