I have some early 1950's American Rifleman magazines. Since they smell musty they are regulated to the garage (by she-who-must-be-obeyed). Our garage is dry not damp and warm (Fla.). Have tried placing them in sealed tubs with baking soda to absorb the mustiness and no luck. Tried putting them in the freezer and no luck. A while back I tried some dryer sheets and it has seemed to help. So the other day I stopped by Dollar General and bought a couple of boxes of their cheapest dryer sheets. I put them every ten pages of so. Got my fingers crossed. Have any of the Forum Members crossed this bridge? And if so what method did you use that worked?

I’ve got at least 20 boxes of old gun magazines in my basement (including all the Amercan Rifleman mags from the late 30s until the 90s). I’m slowly transitioning them to my recycling dumpster.

Wish I could help. I dragged these around for at least four moves, and the only time I look at them is when I grab a box to recycle.

I would save some of the older advertisements' from the 30's & 40's.

All community libraries have a repair shop somewhere in the system. Contact them for what they'd do if the dryer sheets don't work.

Place a single layer of the magazines where they will be in direct sun light. This works wonders with musty paper.

And, the word in the first line of your (OP) post should be relegated, not regulated.

Thanks for the info will try it.

By the way are you an English Teacher? Do you correct all the mispelled words on the forums?

When you get them the way you want, buy a box of plastic covers. They are see-through and have a way to close them with a seal. The seal can be opened and re-used. Keep them inside. I use boxes. That is what I do with my magazine collections. Never had to deal with musty magazines.

There was a man who checked English on everyone's posts on waterfowler.com. He and I became friends. He showed up with his wife at my shop one Saturday morning, unannounced from Michigan. The wife entertained them until all customers were taken care of. The four of us had a great time. He was an English Professor most all his life and did it for fun. Now, the computer almost always spots it for you. No foul.

According to Google this is the second definition of regulated as a past participle : control or supervise (something, especially a company or business activity) by means of rules and regulations.

My Wife controls what musty old things go where. She has decided the magazines go in the garage. Probably lucky I am not staying there also.

If any of you all want to get rid of your old magazines donate or sell them to an used book store second hand store or a place that sells militaria. Believe me, there are guys who are interested in old magazines.
