Old primers?

With the current shortage of primers going on, I stopped in a pawn shop that sells reloading supplies, last week, and bought 2 thousand Winchester small pistol primers, # 1&1/2 - 108 in the white box with the big red W. I didn't get any bargain! $33.00 a thousand! They shoot fine but I wonder how old they are? I haven't bought any in a box like that for a long time! The lot # is KK22L537.

This box style was standard in the early 1990s when I started reloading. A white box with a red X predates them. I know the Super X logo, but cannot date it on reloading supplies.

I think I just recently used up my last brick of those. I believe mine were marked either $10.99 or $11.99.

$33 ain't that bad a price now. If I consider my income when I bought those $10.99 primers vs now, they are probably "cheaper" at $33.

I still have maybe 400 CCI-Speer small rifle with wood trays. I would guess they are 60's sometime and still okay from what I can tell. With primers or ignition problems you will usually get some vertical stringing and I haven't found that to be the case with these older primers.

I've been shooting some RWS large rifle primers from a box dated in 1963. They work every time. The way they were stored certainly could be a factor.

I just finished off a box of primers that was marked Cascade Cartridge Inc (CCI) from the 1960's. Still have 400 Winchester Western primers (yellow box old WW logo) from the 60's also. All go bang.
