I have a old M&P model I think its from before they started putting the V in the serial number. Its serial number is 29870 and it is also marked several places with the number 987102 I think that might be a military number but I'm not sure.It has all the regular stuff like the top of the barrel (SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A. PATENTED FEB.6.06 SEPT.14.09 DEC 29.14)right side of barrel (38 S&W SPECIAL CTG)right side above grip the (S&W TRADE MARK)with(REG.U.S.PAT.OFF) under it right side towards front under cylinder(MADE IN USA) left side barrel(SMITH & WESSON)left side above grip looks like the letter(o) other than the proper placement of the serial numbers and the number (987102 stamped in three places)that are all the markings.I am pretty sure it has aftermarket grips as they are black and creme kinda like stag horn.I'm new to the message boards and not sure how to know if anyone responds so if anyone wants they can send an answer to [email protected] any and all info would be really appriciated and also am curious to the value, not to sell but just to know, thanks again Rob

First off, welcome to the forum.

It sounds as if you have a Military & Police, Model of 1905, 4th Change, that most likely dates to early 1942. 987102 is the serial number, the other number having no real significance.

Few here will venture to opine as to value without seeing some photos posted, as there are just too many variables pertaining to condition and originality to take into account.

Edit: I am presuming there is not an "S" preceding the 987102 on the butt. That would change things entirely. If there is no "S", you're correct in thinking its being before the "V" was added. In fact, it'd be just before Victory production started up. A lot of these late "pre-Victory" revolvers originally had a phosphate finish.

thanks fpr the answer Goony but the 29870 is stamped where the serial numbers are stamped and they all match and the 987102 is the extra number

Again, welcome to the forum.
Where are the various numbers stamped? The serial number will be the one on the bottom of the grip frame, the cylinder face and possibly under the barrel. The numbers in the yoke area are assembly numbers and are internal factory numbers and are only important in determining if the parts are all original to the gun. The numbers on the yoke, the frame opposite the yoke and the back side of the side plate are the assembly numbers.

As others have stated, very hard to place a value without seeing pictures. I can tell you that the M&P was the most widely produced gun in the S&W line with several million made. Hence, the value of these guns is not high like some other models with only hundreds or thousands produced.

You gun in bad shape could be worth $100 on up to real minty for $500 or $600. Part of the country can also affect value. Guns seem to go for more in the larger metropolitan areas where there might be more ready cash to spend. Some of the more rural areas, guns can be had much cheaper. The internet has sort of destroyed those boundaries as now an online auction can be seen all over this country and even around the world.

So, all that said, photos would be the first priority. Condition is king.:D
