I'm looking for a little advice from someone familiar with S&W revolvers.
I've got a Colt Python .357mag with 8" barrel which I use to punch holes in paper at 25 & 50 yards, and play with at 100 yards, a Ruger Blackhawk .357mag because everyone should have a Ruger SA revolver, and a little snub nose Taurus .357mag for concealed carry.
.
I'd like to add a S&W .357mag to my revolver collection. Something for target shooting and possibly deer hunting. I'm thinking something with a 6" barrel, and I'd like to keep the price tag around $600 or less.
My Colt is a 1980 and the Ruger is a 1963, so I'm not afraid of used guns.
.
I'd appreciate your advice and opinion to help guide my S&W purchase.
Thanks,
Tim

You want a 686 then.

I have a model 19-3 with a 6" barrel and those are nice too. I've never tried hunting with it, but it's a lot of fun to shoot and a beautiful revolver

If you like the weight and balance of your Python, definitely a 686. For a little less muzzle and overall weight, the 6" 19.

I would suggest either a 686 prelock with a 6 inch barrel or a model 28 6 inch barrel. Either one can handle 357s without issues. You already have considered by many to be the strongest 357 built today. The Ruger new model Blackhawk in 357. One of the best for hunting.

Good luck,

Another vote for the 686. I have a 4" version and it does everything I want it to do. While I love my 2 Pythons the 686 is capable of doing everything my Pythons can do and just as well. I carried my 686 on duty for several years and was very well served.

Thanks for the advice folks.
I've decided to purchase a 686 with 6" barrel.
A 1983 vintage, because I prefer guns that don't have warnings stamped on them, and mechanical devices built into them that would prevent them from working.
Thanks again,
Tim

Are you referring to the "Hillary Hole"?;)

Is that what it's called?
I just don't want anything to prevent my firearm from working if I need it to be a weapon.
If the gun doesn't go bang when you need it, it's just an expensive club!

I am partial to calling it the "zit", per another Forum member. I like them on faces about the same as on guns :)

Some think they are good to eat.

BTW . . . I truly hate S&W revolvers with zits!

It is the ultimate turn-off . . . or should I say . . . the ultimate "turn away," for that's what I immediately do when I approach an interesting Smith and discover the "zit." No use for 'em at all.

Oh well . . . it's off to the Macon gun show. I hope it hasn't been canceled today.
