First off NO I’m not looking to purchase an armored car!

Second I’m not referring to military type vehicles, talking about limos, regular cars and SUVs that are modified for protection. (Stuff like Donald Trump, the CEOs of some huge corporation and other CIVILIAN people would use!

Been a car guy a long time and you see all sorts of weird cars/trucks offered up for sale to general public (Ambulances, fire trucks, hearses, stretched limos old school busses, regular buses and other specialty rigs.)

I have never ever saw a add for an armored car for sale so I’m wondering what happens to those vehicle when they get older or not good enough for the people that own/ride in them.

Do they go overseas, is there some sort of law that restrict their sale, do the companies that do the modifications put restrictions on what can happen?

I have seen one every now and then. Usually over priced and rather dated, style wise.

Look in Hemmings and the like.

I think the key word is "VIP" or "Executive" limo.

On one episode of THC's "American Pickers" several months ago, the guys found an armored car with an early 1950s chassis in a junk yard.

The armored car companies moved the armored "pods" from chassis to chassis as the need for chassis replacement arose. Some of those pods remained in service for over 50 years, maybe longer, only the chassis changed.

For many years I was part of the demolition team which destroyed the Secret Service's Armored fleet of vehicles when they were declared surplus/obsolete. I blew up Carter's, Ford's, Reagan's and Clinton's Presidential Limousines along with many other armored vehicle for Gov. big Whigs. The biggest thrill I had when I packed the explosives (I put extra in it.) into the limo used by Hillary Clinton and then set them off. It was so satisfying to see pieces flying every where.

Who did the armor work? A company in the US or was is Mohammad's Garage in downtown Kabul? They don't say to what level of protection the armor will protect. Will it stop pistol or rifle? What level of pistol, 9mm or .44 Mag.? If rifle, 7.62x39mm or .30-'06 AP rounds? That makes a big difference. If you think your vehicle is rated for rifle rounds but it will stop only 9mm, you can be in a world of hurt!

I think there are several custom shops in Texas that make them up, mainly for wealthy Mexican nationals. They will (for a price) provide whatever level of protection is desired, within limits.

Quite a few very wealthy Mexicans have changed their addresses to San Antonio as it is much safer for them north of the border. Seems a large portion of the high-end real estate here is being sold to them. I remember a newspaper story from several years ago about one of the more prominent Mexican media moguls who moved himself and his family to San Antonio. His comments were essentially that with a telephone and a computer, he no longer needed to risk his life by continuing to live in Mexico just to run his business, and he always had his private jet to get him to Mexico quickly if it became necessary. The real problem for the wealthy in Mexico is kidnapping.

That's a good question. You can buy used ambulances and fire trucks. You can buy used police cars. I wonder if armored trucks are somehow stripped and recycled?

Now that I think about it, though, didn't Chip Foose or one of those other custom guys do a rebuild/custom armored car on TV. Or maybe that other guy out in California, the guy with all the tattoos...not Jesse James, that other guy who does rides for all the famous people?

Might be cool to have one if you could afford to put gas in the thing.

There are quite a few high dollar companies in the U. S. who build armored cars for corporate big wigs, diplomats, heads of state, and regular ol' multi-millionaires.

National Geographic Channel did a program on one of them a few years ago. Really interesting. You could probably find the program online. You can even get machine guns mounted in them. And some are armored enough to protect occupants from RPGs and small missles. The vehicles will sustain major damage, of course, but the folks inside will survive.

why blow them up....... ??????

I understand a company in California is coming up with a "green version" high MPG semi-armored car that does not reject bullets but does slow them down some. The bonus is that it gets a full 12 MPG compared to about 1/3 that MPG by fully armored vehicles.

So when gas mileage is more important than your safety, shop green in California.

Hess and Eisenhardt/ S&S in Cincinnati on Blue Ash Rd has built coaches for many years, from simple limos and ambulances to high security vehicles. They are owned by another company now. I did purchase a used ambulance from them many years ago. At that time, their craftsmanship was excellent.
