I have an older hand ejector a friend wants me to inspect, clean, and lube. He'd like to know a little about it, so I'm posting the particulars. Serial is 415XX and are stamped on cylinder, barrel, and frame butt. It's stamped 38 Special with barrel at 6 3/8". The sights are pre-war adjustable and a true 5 screw sideplate.
It has some surface rust and holster wear and has some pitting on left side of barrel at muzzle and between stop notches on cylinder and edge of fluting corresponding with that. Probably from being stored or shoved in a drawer for a long time. Also not original grips, they are beautiful walnut with a thumb ledge on left side for target shooting.
History or value without photos ?

Probably a pre-WWII .38/44 Outdoorsman.
Value next to impossible without pictures.

To confirm this identification, does it have a square butt and an ejector rod shroud?

With a serial of 415xx and stamped .38 Special, it can't be an M&P Target since at that serial those would still have the US SERVICE CTG stuff with the caliber.

Value indeed impossible without photos.
