I just picked up an older M&P40, mid 2006 vintage. Anything I should replace? Any potential issues with the first models?

If you like a more audible and tactile reset, you should get the current trigger bar and slide stop lever. That one probably has the funky old sear in it as well that gives you a longer, mushier and heavier break with a bit longer reset. you have options of either finding a factory sear or installing apex stuff for that part. there might be some other stuff depending on how far you wanna go but this is a start!

trigger bar:
SMITH & WESSON M&P TRIGGER BAR ASSEMBLY, "H" | Brownells

slide stop lever:
M&P Slide Stop Assembly Gen 3 for 9mm/.40/.357 Sig : SMITH & WESSON M&P SLIDE STOP ASSEMBLY, GEN 3 | Brownells

Before I gave it to my son I had an original M&P40 that I put thousands of rounds through. The things I bought for it that really made a difference to me were the apex sear and a factory 9mm barrel. The sear lightened the trigger pull and also made it smoother and if I recall it also shortened the reset. With the 9mm barrel (and a 9mm mag) I was (of course) able to shoot 9mm out of it pretty reliably and accurately. Since then I have also installed either TFO or TFX sights on all my semi's that they are made for. If I had another M&P I would absolutely install the new sights on it. I wish there was some way to install them on my Beretta.
