On a lighter note. Who do you think made the best movie Pirate?

Reason of this is--that in the past few days--ive dug out several DvDs I havent seen for awhile.These include: The Desert Rats, Target Zero and a few others. One name in one stood out--Robert Newton.Newton was opposite Richard Burton in: The Desert Rats--having :::in the movie::: been Burtons Schoolmaster in his younger days. Newtons character is that of a drunk. He was English but moved to Australia when things got too bad for him in merry ole----.

Anyway, on remembering he was in: The Desert Rats---got me into thinking of him as a Pirate in: Long John Silver--which I saw several months ago on TCM and thought he was absolutely--the most perfect movie pirate ive eve seen--beating out Errol Fynn as Captain Peter Blood and Geoffrey Thorpe, as well as Burt Lancaster as: the Crimson Pirate, Tyrone Power? as the Black Swan, Kirk Dougles in: Scalawag, Charlton Heston as the main Pirate in his great version of Treasure Island, Yul Brynner as Jean Le Fitte in: The Buccaneer and a few others like Louis Hayward, and even Maureen O'Hara.

Anyway,on watching Robert Newton as Long John Silver, nobody comes close to being spot on--as a Pirate-than Robert Newton was. Just wondering if anyone has a name of an actor who could toppleRobert Newton as the perfect pirate.I hope nobody mentions whats-his-face from the Pirates of the ---movies--because he doesnt come anywhere close to Robert Newton--Flynn etc.

Treasure Island

The pirate that always comes to mind from Treasure Island is Wallace Beery.

As Long John Silver with Jackie Cooper as Jim Hawkins I think it is one of the best.

I like old movies and old actors. No green screen required.

I do think that Depp had a hilariously affected way to play Jack Sparrow but he's not the first thing that pops up when I hear the word 'pirate'.

For Treasure Island its Charlton Heston. Long John Silver, in the book any way was a murderous maneuvering villain not a comic figure. Charlton did the character right in his version Robert Stevenson's classic tale.

I wish I could find it again. I read a biography of Robert Newton online. The first words were:

"Robert Newton, the man who put the 'arghh' in Pirate."

Perfect.
