on old age

I used to work at a foundry, using a torch to cut off excess pieces of titanium from the castings. Inevitably, pieces would fall on the floor, instead of in the pit.
One day, a younger co-worker noticed there were several pieces on the floor and I was kicking them to the side. He asked why I didn't pick them up.
I told him, "When you get to be my age, you don't bend over for each one. You wait until there's a pile of them and kick them together so you only have to bend down once. Saves the back and also, they cool down that way."

Generally wait till several things are in the same area, before attempting to pick them up. Exceptions of course.

When I was young, finances were always a problem. The kids needed braces, the car broke, the roof on the house was leaking. I traveled for my job and made a good living, but there were so many family events that I missed because I was out of town. My last job was 24/7/365, and I even had to be available on vacation with my cellphone because often I had to at least verbally approve changes related to EPA or safety.

Now I get up whenever I want to. I go fishing if I feel like it. If I don't I go in the pool or work on one of my other hobbies. There have been health issues, but thank God modern medicine has come to the rescue. I'm happy to bend over and pick up trash on the lawn (and sometimes I simply use a rake).

No, I'm not going to lament getting old. My problems today are insignificant compared to those during my working years. My only sorrow is that way too many old friends and relatives have passed away.

Sincerely, all due respect, but I must disagree. Despite constant pain and the residue of illnesses (which have grown to more than residue!), I've never left the street. And I never will.
