A week or so ago I managed to sprain (I hope) the ring finger of my dominant hand. This isn't the first time I've banged up that hand. Fortunately, even in retirement I do some shooting with the other hand. I discovered I need to do more. Since I've had the problem before, I have a couple of J frame holsters for carrying on the "other" side. Not ideal, but better than a stern look and a harsh word. Need to do some shopping for a holster for something a bit larger.

Something to keep in mind, the world isn't real respectful of your limitations.

Police academy 1973, practicing partial reloads from loops and shooting weak hand barricade at 25 yards. The instructor mentioned that you should train with the weak hand until you can group just as tight as the strong hand, but take maybe 50% longer shooting the group.

As a course objective such shooting was a miserable failure.

I took all that advise to heart and even now can still shoot tight groups lefty, but I take a bit longer aiming and squeezing. I do at least two cylinders worth each range day. Also still practice partial reloads with proper indexing and load from speed strips otherwise. Oh yeah, my revolvers are all DAO, 442, 340PD and K6s 3".

It's funny really. I can barely stir my coffee left handed, but shoot a revolver D/A? Absolutely.

Being an active participant in many shooting competition over the years, I have learned to shoot acceptably with my left hand. Some days I can shoot with my weak hand quite well and some weeks not so much. When I shot Cowboy Action matches I had to shoot a Colt SAA well with my weak hand and that is where I came to appreciate my other training doing so. That said, I am slower with weak hand shooting - but I suppose that would be the norm for most who are not ambidextrous.

As I age, I no longer enjoy the sharp eyes I had as a younger man. Now past 60, my left eye has is a little clearer focus on the sights than my right, dominant eye. Not a lot mind you, but I have been doing more left handed shooting.
