My wife and I are going to the movies in a couple of weeks. No, we are not going to see one of the latest releases but actually a film that premiered in 1942 and one we have seen many times but only on the television screen. The Fabulous Fox Theater in Atlanta, one of the grand old style theaters, will be showing Casablanca on June 14. A couple of years ago we saw The Wizard of Oz there and, as many times as we had seen that one on tv, it's amazing the difference watching it in the theater. I'm sure Casablanca will be as great an experience.

I would love to see Casablanca on the big screen! It is my second favorite Bogart movie, the first being something about a dingus.....:)

Something about Bogart and a "dingus"?
Are you maybe thinking about and confusing Bogart with Frank Sinatra in the western entitled "Dirty Dingus Magee"?

Or do you mean the dinky kinda dingus steamboat Bogart had in "The African Queen"?

That's all I can think of to help what you might be trying to remember.

Casablanca is a classic I'd also like to see on the big screen. My favorite line in it is when Inspector Louis (played by Claude Rains) self righteously says "I'm shocked! Absolutely shocked to find out gambling is going on in this establishment!"....while at the same time the girl comes up saying...."Here's your winnings inspector"....and he stuffs them in his pocket Lol.

Have you seen The Cheap Detective? It's a parody of Bogie movies, with Peter Falk playing Bogie. It's, mostly, a mixture of Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon. Marsha Mason is his partner's widow. Madeline Kahn is the woman with many different names that needs his help. Dom De Luis is The Fat Man. Stockard Channing is his secretary.

I wouldn't say that it's Better, but it's purty dang good.

That is gonna be a great time!

Another great thing about it is the Fox has an organ named the "Mighty Mo" and often, before a movie they will have a sing along of old songs while the house organist plays. They project the words to the songs on the screen using the original 1930's glass slides.

This is part of Coca-Cola's Summer Film Fest. July 15 is another one I will probably want to go see. Another great love story but with a twist. "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." Yep, they will be showing The Princess Bride.

They were showing it in Iowa a few months ago, but I couldn't get away to see it.
It's the 70th anniversary. That's my favorite movie of all time.

"Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world.....she walks into mine".

They don't make 'em like that anymore.

Old movies can indeed look good on a big screen. Several years ago The Big Sleep was restored to its original wartime cut and re-released, but with the supplementary Lauren Bacall scenes and a film historian commentary tacked on so you could see how the producers adjusted the movie to capitalize on the Bogie/Bacall popularity. I caught it in a revival theater and loved it.

So Bacall got extra screen time in the commercial 1946 cut, but the audience lost the identity of the person who killed the Sternwallow's chauffeur.

Not that it much mattered, because Raymond Chandler didn't know either, and he had written the book.

The Fabulous Fox. Haven`t been there in thirty years. Sounds like a lot of fun, but I no longer care to drive in Atlanta. Hope you have a great time.

The Fox is a terrific place--seeing "Casablanca" and "The Princess Bride" there would be worth dealing with Atlanta.

I might see if my niece, who is a serious movie buff, wants to go.

Thanks for the heads up.

Ain't it though? For those that don't know, the Fox was originally the Yaarab Temple Shrine Mosque and has a Middle Eastern theme throughout. But due to financial difficulty, they made a deal with William Fox to complete it. It seats 4678 people and it actually has a 3D indoor scene around the balcony of a Middle Eastern village, a huge canopy over the balcony making it appear as if you are under a tent roof, the ceiling of the theater has small lights that appear to be twinkling stars with clouds drifting by overhead. I can't think of a better setting to see Casablanca. For Lynyrd Skynyrd fans, the live version of "Freebird" where Ronnie says "Play it pretty for Atlanta" was recorded at the Fox.

Cooter, your welcome. Hope you get to see them. If you do, look for an old fat guy with a ponytail. That'll probably be me. :D
