One Expensive 686...

I'm looking for a near-new 4" square-butt 686 right now and saw that one but thought his minimum bid of $750 was too high and dismissed it right there. It's hard to believe that at least two people thought it was worth over $1,600!

IMO this is an example of Shill Bidding. Good news for Gunbroker is that they get to collect a fee on every one of these mythical "sales". Bad news for us is that sometimes some fool falls for this ploy and overpays by a vast amount.

If you have a spare 686 now might be a good time to clean it up and list is on GB... :D

Smith & Wesson 686-3 not 66, 19 "Beauty" 357 Mag ! : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

Some observations:

1. That is a lot of photos.

2. The ad must have taken at least two hours to write.

3. If you want to mark up a sale of your gun 300%, just sit down with your copy of the Standard Catalog of S&W and type in model changes with quotations and throw in stupid catchphrases and the word "RARE" from time to time.

Than I guess I could do pretty good on my 686 hunter with the 8 3/8" barrel that has the factory broached scallops for scope rings. If only I could find the rings

That auction can't be real. Nobody is that stupid.

The buyer's intelligence level is not the issue here.

If you want something bad enough, and have the money,
you pay whatever price necessary to get what you want.

That price is just a glimpse of the future and what's to come.

hmmm, might be a good time to list a couple of my S&W's that I don't often use. Yea very slick marketing..."not a 66. not a 19, but a full lug 686" woah.

53 photos and none of the "box or case" that the seller eludes to almost at the end of his sale pitch.
Comes With a Box or Case !

For that kind of money I'd need a few more analogies.

On the bright side it was "FREE=SHIPPING"

People paying Python/Pre-27 money for a 686? Did I miss something here?

These certainly are interesting times in the gun-buying world.

No tools or box on this one, how about $1200? :D

Of course it has the "AUTO-DYNAMIC TARGETING SYSTEM UNIQUE TO THIS MODEL!!!" Just put your hand on the grips, extend your arm toward the target - holding your elbow stiff - and VOILA!!! You are pointing the gun at the target AUTOMATICALLY!!! YOU CAN'T MISS!!!

It's a nice gun. But that ad and those bids are either a scam or somebody is ignorant of the market price.

I've thought it over, and if that dash-3 is worth $1700, my no-dash has gotta be worth more....

Here it is, I'm listing for $2500. Any takers? Lol.

It has always been my theory that the photos on G.B. are the
secret.
By the time the prospective buyer scrolls down through all those photos
he/ one becomes emotionally invested in the piece and may bid crazily.

We just had a 6 inch 586 in 99% condition in the store WITH the AAA serial
prefix and sold it for $650.
We probably could have made a killing on Gone-broker with this type of sales pitch.

I may list one of mine in the future with 53 photos just to see what happens.
But it won't be the nickel model 17. That one stays for a while.

It's true about the photos...they make a world of difference. People have enough of a problem not getting to handle and inspect the functioning of a firearm. Throw in a few crappy pictures and it just adds to the uncertainty...they are not going to bid with conviction....or wreckless abandon as this 686 is evidence of.

I find it interesting that even with 53 photos, you don't see one here and rarely see one of the cylinder open, gun upside down and a close up shot of the underside of the top strap on where you would normally see some degree of flame-cut on a magnum caliber (long sentence). What about a side shot showing a close up of the gap between the cylinder face and forcing cone?

i find it hard to belive that, with a 750.00( i think is way to much)starting price and 6 different people bidding on it. WOW....... so that just goes to prove that there is more than 1 sucker born every min.

I agree with Kenjen, somethings up you used to see one of these crazy deals a year or so, but now they are everyday. A few weeks ago I saw a 600.00 bid on a 3 " 686 barrel, JUST THE BARREL, and it still didnt meet the reserve, the barrel is still for sale.WHATS UP WITH THAT!!!
Ive seen the whole 3" CS 686 go for only a couple hundred more .
Maybe its a ploy by GB to get alot more people to sell guns there ,
I usually never call names, but its hard for me to believe someone would be stupid enough to pay over 1700 for a gun they could find almost anywhere for way less than half of that ???
Anyway sure alot more folks with super high prices now that these type of sales are supposedly going on.
I was gonna wait til retirement to sell of some stock, but if I find this is for real they may have to go now.Im not holding my breath. Take care Bob
