I respect the philosophy expressed in the quote below, and I agree with it - in principle. But that is not going to come about quickly, if it ever does. In the meantime, consider joining me in making a simple request - in writing - to your school system administrators. Ask them to look for a plan that will make it possible to neutralize an armed attacker in one minute. Not "respond to" - "neutralize". When loss of life is happening, seconds matter. One minute is not unreasonable. It could quite literally be an eternity.

You might also ask them to also consider changes in school architecture that will provide "safe areas" (i.e., places that are proof against small arms fire from the outside) for children that they can reach in one minute, just like evacuating for a fire, or taking shelter from a violent storm. That should be especially germane if the school corporation is planning any new construction.

If you put a concrete goal in front of these people, it may help them to realize that some things that seem attractive to them are just not going to be effective, some tough decisions are going to have to be made, and action taken, until a different environment prevails (as expressed below). I am passing this idea/request along because I thought it was one of the more constructive suggestions I have seen in the last few days.

It doesn't take long to send an email. Put the idea to these administrators that they need a realistic plan to neutralize an attacker within one-minute. Force them to search for something that might actually work. Wouldn't hurt to send a similar message to local politicos - mayor, school board, etc.

William, you are indisputably correct (AFAIAC) but the point is that there is a problem that many people want very badly and very urgently to try to eliminate, or at least to manage it better. If they are going to do anything at all, we should try to keep them on the right track.

The writer of the above needs to get a grip on reality... It takes a really committed moonbat to prefer aesthetics over our child's safety.

You don't hear any such complaints coming from Israel where teachers are routinely armed.

Still, I do agree with the second part of that statement. But the issue with this is that it will take considerably longer to have any real effect. Also, given issues with medical privacy and the associated stigmas that would necessarily be attached, I doubt that the leftists would allow this avenue develop into anything fruitful.

One minute--

Love the idea--if we could get teachers to be as enthusiastic about this as they are about fire drills. Remember the unions. A good friend, now retired after 30 years as an LEO, tried to work with schools on this problem. He had no success.

My friend states it this way "no one seems to want a uniformed presence in their schools, and most teachers are neither gun people nor do they wish to be involved in security matters" He has dealt with the union on this matter and they are very opposed.

I have a friend on our local school board--I'll start working on him.

Boys if y'all remember after Sept. 11, we placed Air Marshals along with other Federal,
State and Local LEOs onboard commerical aircraft to deal with this hi-jackin problem we were having.

We may have a hi-jacked plane next week,
but the meer threat of armed men aboard, pretty much changed that terror plan.


I realize schools cover more area than the cabin of a plane.

Having trained with State and Federal officers for response to active shooter(s) in a school scenario.
Upon entering the building, 3 of us in a half dozen drills....Achieved Termination of Threat in about 1-3 minutes on average.

(We Ran to the gunfire and did our business where it was found. No Jacking Around)

With armed personal in house response times could very well be 1 minute or less.

The one real message from Columbine is YOU DON'T WAIT FOR THE SWAT TEAM! Whoever gets there first goes to where the noise is. Another unlearned message is that armed people (I don't like the term civilians in a non-military setting) have actually prevented or stopped massacres. At Pearl High School in Mississippi serveral years ago Luke Woodham, after being thoroughly indoctrinated by a devil worshiper whose conviction was later overturned, and after killing his mother and several students, was halted in his tracks by a teacher who had gone to his car and got a gun he wasn't supposed to have on campus. When confronted by the teacher with a gun he started crying. He was headed to the junior high school when he was stopped. He was tried in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and housed in our jail. I was part of the security team at his trial. This monster was an obvious coward who apparently enjoyed his few minutes notoriety. He ain't enjoying it now. His picture can be seen by going to Mississippi Department of Corrections inmate search. The only thing that kept him from getting a death sentence was his age.

All teachers are not capable of being armed and going through the necessary training. Some of them are. A lot of them are veterans and would gladly go through the training needed to protect our students. It works in Israel and it worked once here. When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
