Picked up a new Bodyguard 2.0, $399 at LGS yesterday. Took it home, cleaned, lubed and went to an indoor range to shot 100 rounds (50 Fiocchi/50 Sellier & Bellot) FMJ ammo with it.
My observations, YMMV:
1) Clean and lube before shooting when new. Some left over manufacturing grime and residue from test firing. Trigger went from 4.5 lbs out of the box to a little over 4 after cleaning and I had zero FTF, FTE or failures to lock back after the last shot. The pistol ran great
2) Clean and check both mags. My 10 round mag spring had what looked like excessive hardened Plastikote stuck on the top part of the springs. Sharp points of the stuff caught my cleaning patch which was how I noticed it (see pic below). I used some Hoppes and a brass brush to get the sharp high spots off. The 12 round mag had some also but not excess. No idea why the tops of the springs appear to be coated. Both mags worked well in the gun, but I could only fit 9 in the 10 round one and 10 in the 12 rounder by hand. The springs should loosen up with more loading and unloading. I'm also letting them sit with as much as I can stuff in for now. Mag ejection is great when empty, but you have to pull the mag out if they are full. Not sure if that's normal or not.
3) The slide stop is just that. A slide stop. I could not get the slide lever to release the slide with one hand. Wouldn't budge. Hoping it loosens up with use. Slingshot worked fine.
3) The trigger came down to just under 4 lbs after the 100 round range session. No grit or hitches. Smooth take up, a little resistance, hit the wall and a clean break. A smooth press works fine. Reset is not what I would call short or strong. Took a little getting used to. Didn't let it out far enough 2-3 times and no bang. Thought maybe a FTF, but just needed to let the trigger out to reset. I need to become more familiar with it.
4) FOR ME...the gun was not easy to shoot at first. Feels perfect in my hands, but it's a super light and thin micro-pistol with a small sight radius and shoots like one. After watching Youtube gunslingers I thought I would be making 1" clover leafs at 7 yards. Honest Outlaw, I'm not...Shooting multiple rapid double taps followed by a single shot the gun did what it what it was designed for, close up self defense. (see pic) I shot it marginally better (but significantly faster) than my .38 J-frame Airweights. Sights worked great and were easy to get on target quicky with the six lane wide rear sight. I thought it did shoot somewhat low. Took me a while to use a combat hold (six o'clock hold is out ot the question) sight picture over the target which the large front sight somewhat obscures. But no excuses, my obvious lack skill is to blame for poor grouping, not the gun.
Next I need to get some SD ammo down range. I'm going to try out Hornady Critical Defense and Lucky Gunner (Hornady's other brand) XTP JHP. both have more tapered bullet ogive which should feed well. There is a very slight ledge at the top of the frame feed ramp which I don't understand. Copper from the FMJ was clearly visible on that ledge but I'm betting that's from the lower part of the bullet and not the nose. However some ammo like Fed HST and Winchester PDX1 have very wide mouths so going with the Hornady to start.
Overall I have a very positive impression of the gun in the context of being very concealable, high capacity pocket carry option. Still not in comfortable with the idea of not being able to clean out the striker channel without removing the rear sight, but we'll see how that plays out in the longer run. Once I get some more rounds downrange and test different SD ammo, i'll revisit and update this review.
