Only hog hunters need reply

I've killed many over the years here in Texas & the .45 ACP accounts for probably 75% of them. Wouldn't hesitate to make it my primary weapon going in after them. +1 for the hollow points.

the last one i took was with a 500 magnum...5 rounds before he was dispatched...tough critters but a blast to hunt!

By all means get out and enjoy diong what you love to do. Do it with people you enjoy being with. I prefer not to hunt alone.

I would hate too see that get you hurt. All I was trying to say is If you want to use a 45 Auto I would prefer to see you shoot from a stand. Not on the ground face to face with a pissed off hog and a 45 auto. They are tough to stop comming at you head on.

Sorry if I offended you.
I've been gone for a few hours, the wife and I went to the beach to eat and watch the surf or I would have answered you sooner. You didn't offend me in any way and you misunderstood my response. Thanks for the good advice.

Great detail. That tells a lot of valuable info.

Go with an experienced pal if you can. Go with a heavy hard cast SWC bullet if you can in your handgun.
A rifle is better. With a tough bonded bullet.
Bring your nitroglycerine! (I'm serious about this, take it from a quad bypass veteran) If things get exciting, you'll be glad you had it.
They are quite capable of being taken with hand guns as long as the shooter is up to the task.
HAVE FUN! That's why your doing it!
It's no more dangerous that getting your airborne patch.

With replaced knees and a troublesome hip I'd be a bit on the careful side when it comes to hog hunting. I've had family members treed and the hogs hung around a while raising cain.

You raise a good point. Running on the ground isn't likely and I suspect climbing isn't easy. You might try a ladder stand you can sit in comfortably. I'm pretty sure you don't want to get caught on the ground by an angry hog.

To each his own but you might consider a bit more gun. I'd go with a .44 carbine of some type or a deer rifle. A .350 Remington would be great on hogs.

Have fun. Let us know the outcome of your hunt.

they are open season here in texas, no limit, if you can find a place to hunt, the farmers and ranchers complain about them but will charge you to hunt them, but they are abundant

Marlin 45-70 and a tree stand for me. I saw three of my buddies chased about 40 yds through some heavy woods a few years back. They walked up on a big momma pig and a bunch of piglets. She got pissed and started chasing these guys. i ownly had a 686 357 with me, but I couldn't have shot her anyway because I was laughing so hard.

EXACTLY ! ! ! There is no reason to shoot a "CAUGHT" hog. A folding yellow handled Stockman works fine.

I'm not going to take the time to post over 50 knife killed hogs, but if you don't believe me, log into www.hunt101.com and go to members galleries and type in slickheadshooter. Enjoy!

Good post. I'm interested in this as well. Located in Northern California and would probably be hunting the coastal areas. Hogs here aren't supposed to be as big as in other areas - but taste great. I was hoping to go with either the 44 Mag or 500 Mag. Neither will be scoped. Suggestions appreciated.
I'm in NorCal and have hunted pigs on and off for years now. Other posters aren't joking about running/climbing a tree. This is precisely why I don't hunt them with a pistol. When I started I used an old Enfield No.1 Mk.III in .303 British. That old battle horse dropped pigs at 100 yards like no bodies business. A miss at that range gives me time to shoot again or an extra few seconds to scramble if Mr.Pork decides to make a charge at me. Now I use my Stevens .308 and it does just as good a job, if not better. Always carry a sidearm though...just in case.

I've had good luck hunting the Hunter Liggett Army Base area in the past.

We used to catch'em and bring'em out live. I lost interest in it when they stopped letting us transport them live. It just ain't the same when you have to kill'em.

I've trapped and hunted them for years. I'll use a .45 to dispatch them when they're in a trap, but otherwise I use a 30-30 or larger rifle. Remember that the heart is lower in the body than other game animals. Very dangerous crittere - don't take them lightly.

I'm gonna poke my nose in here and maybe get it nipped off...

But swampwalker if you got 50 acres in FL and Hog Hunting Experience

I am willing to Wager that Ingmansinc would be happy for the chance to learn from you and maybe even help pay for the beer & such

He can't live too terribly far from you

Judging from his avatar I am willing to bet he knows his way around shooting implements too

TC,

we used to move them at night in our dog boxes. We would take them off private property and release them on Water Management property on the Big River or the Choctawhatchee.

Those were the good ole days........

I don't know who these guys are or exactly where they are in Texas, but I suspect they considered it a good day's hunt. You gotta appreciate their armament, too.

That's probably the results of a "depredation hunt".

The sad truth about that lower picture is that it probably didn't even make a dent in the population of 3 square miles.
