It seems the DEA forgot about a detainee picked up in a drug raid in April of 2012. Daniel Chong who is a 25 year old student was left in a windowless detention cell and forgotten about for four and a half days. He wasn't going to be charged with anything after it was determined he was not part of a drug ring but at the house in question that was raided, to smoke some weed.

The officer told him to hang tight for a minute and someone would be right back and he would be released. Four and a half days later he was relocated in the cell covered with feces and drinking his own urine. He had a five day stay in the hospital for dehydration and kidney failure. He was also recently awarded 4.1 million dollars for the oopsie. I guess the court didn't buy the Steve Martin excuse, "Well Excuuuuse Me. I Forgot." Oh well, it's not actually the governments money. Tax payers take another hit.

My understanding is that the government settled for that. Which means that they expected to lose a lot more at trial.

I don't begrudge the settlement. On the other hand, I think that we, as taxpayers, should be allowed to stomp on the gonads of the folks responsible for this.

Just take it out of the pay of the laddies who messed up.

Charlie

DEA loses that much in a couple of suitcases a year in Mexico, like CIA lost millions in RVN and Iraq, and ATF loses weapons in Mexico. So it's small ball to GAO.
No offense meant to brothers in service, just an observation of bureau bungling.

If this guy had had asthma, he could have died in there. They probably wouldn't have let him keep his inhaler.

I read that story a year ago. How do you forget about a person? If i was Daniel i'd be going for a lot more then 4mil

Another one i remember reading was when some kid was put in a holding cell for some minor offence and got beat on by a hardened thug for 10 min because no one was monitoring the cameras. Im sure he made out quite well too

Exactly! How do you just forget about somebody in a situation like that? Are you so important or so busy that you just forget about that guy locked up in detention room #4 for over four days? If you are so absent minded maybe you should be in another line of work. Just a thought....Do you want fries with that? Welcome to Wal-Mart. Enjoy your shopping experience. Oh ****! Where did I leave the shopping carts?

No way should the person or persons respondsable for that foul up should keep their job. If they were even a day from retirement if I had the power would they get a dime of it. Every dime they had should be taken except for food money.

Now do you think he learned his lesson about smoking weed. Or do you think he will spend his 4.1 mil, on some of the good stuff?

Bad **** happens to those who do drugs:D Pun intended.

But on a serious note, those agents should be fired. And we as tax payers should be able to sue for the money we lost because of their screw up.

They'd only file for bankruptcy and get the judgment discharged.

Which is why I'm for letting taxpayers stomping on their gonads. Hell, we could sell tickets for that and recoup some of the 4 mil they cost us.....

I'm of the thought that I don't know anything about either side of the story and won't judge so quickly. Obviously a major mistake that has to be answered for but you folks want to lynch someone...I'm sure the guy who won the $$ is an angel and the jailers are halfwits.

I would wager that if we could see the rap sheet on the dope smoker we would be thrilled to know that he is now going to smoke up, shoot up, whatever...millions of $$ of taxpayer money. Bad screw up by the jailers...waste of money to the con. No good side to this story.:(
