After reading the thread below this one I felt that people should know that TWO bills passed. One about concealed carry on campuses and one about open carry by LICENSED handgun owners. As a Chief of Police I supported both bills but the big city chiefs didn't want any part of it. Read HB910 and the accompanying SB. Both are good bills and expand the rights of Texans to self defense. It becomes effective on January 1st 2016 after the Governor signs it and I am sure he will.

They also took out the amendment that would prevent officers from asking to see the license of an open carry individual.

I left Texas temporally for family business to the Commonwealth of Kentucky,
which has constitutional open carry since statehood.

I see folks open carry out on the rural route and sometimes in town, it's purty much a non event.

Chief, thank you for supporting those two bills.

My son chairs the ag dept. at a Texas collage and whole heartily supports campus concealed carry.

As for open carry,

We all know, it's not what's on a man's hip...
It's what's in his heart that counts!

Good for you Chief.

A battle won in the war. Thank you for your support. Surprisingly we have open carry in MA for class A holders. I can't imagine anyone ever doing it. (at least in the Metro areas) A non event in Kentucky would probably have the National Guard called out here.

The fight continues.

Even if nobody in MA, TX, or the other 40+ States ever carries openly, what counts, is being able to (by Law), should any of us choose to on any particular day. :)
I may never, but come Jan 2016, I CAN if I want to. ;)

I'm glad it passed and Gov. Abbott said he will sign it when it comes to his desk. I live on the border w/ mexico and here in this town at least I can probably get away with open carry I (I do have a CHL). and since I live/work within 1 mile of the downtown area it's not uncommon to see a plainsclothed LEO with a sidearm in plain view at the grocery store or whataburger during lunchtime so my guess is, with my sidearm in an appropiate holster in open view, no one is going to care to 2nd look me.
I think there is a time & place when to OC, honestly most of the time I'm going to keep it concealed.
When I do choose to OC, first I'd like to buy a decent LEO type holster with several retention points for safety/security. I'm just glad in Texas we now have that choice.

I've said this many times....

There are times and places for everything,
I don't always open carry, but I don't like having to be forced to hide
my lawfully own and possessed sidearm like some common criminal,
just to step out of the vehicle and pump a lit'l gas or what not.

I've never advocated promenading about the town just for the sake of ' showin off '
no more than having to don a sport coat in hundred degree weather just to hide my personal defense sidearm.

Althought, I like fancy BBQ rigs and such, there's a time and place for those as well.

Another thing to think about. At least with OC passing, we can now for example, wear a pair of shorts/pants, tee shirt, OWB holster and just throw a simple button up short sleeve shirt over that, not exactally concealed, but not exactally out in the open either but comfortable I think. Its 95° outside as I type this and its not even August yet,,, ughhh.

Yeah... Nobody from TX will need to post 'What kind of rig do I need for...(jogging, basketball, running, biking, etc) :)

And that's what people here have been saying all along. Choice.

Been contemplating getting a Lobo with the retention strap myself. A couple of us were rolling with a miscreant the other day and sure enough he grabs hold of my buddies gun and tried to snatch it. Unsuccessful, but sure got me to thinking.

I don't open carry but if I were to, I absolutely would have some type of retention.

Enjoy your well deserved new freedom.

Open carry has been the law here forever and no need for a permit to exercise you RIGHT. Very rarely see it though except around hunting season. Most people would just figure you were coming in or going out in the country if they saw someone with a gun and think nothing of it. I picked up a model 69 from my LGS and stuck it in my pocket, the grips stuck way out and on the way home I stopped at the gas station and when I went into pay the girl asked "Is that a gun in your pocket?" I said "yes, does it bother you?" No, just curious. I explained I had just bought it. Basically nothing except curiosity. Here you see still see rifles in gun racks and no only are the doors probably not locked the windows may be down. Stealing is frowned on and getting caught with your hands on somebodies gun wouldn't be a good plan. Very bad idea. Better the cops catch you than the owner.

Thank you Chief.

Also--Ditto on choice.Ill probably never OC but you never can tell///////Anyway,I just like the option to be able to do so.

Thank you Gov Abbott as well.

" printing " or the inadvertent reveal is not an issue in Texas, has not been for a while now..... that said, I may not open carry often, but, open carry is an option. I live in the DFW area and the we do not have mountain lions or other such dangerous critters, but , we do have two legged predators to contemplate.

I for one would prefer Constitutional Carry, alas, not this session. We have taken steps to reverse 140 years of carpet bagger laws in my home state.... there is still hope.

Very Good!
Naturally, the TX Legislative site hasn't been updated yet.
(may not show the update until Monday)
Thanks for posting the official news report! :)
