You can wear a cape if you want to, wardrobe is not legislated, but please wear something under the cape, this is Texas after all, not one of those other "States"

Texas40, I believe that it would be proper to say " We don't need no stinking capes"

Yeah Oklahoma passed that law a few years ago it also includes sword canes and switchblade automatic knives. I always thought a sword cane would be pretty cool, but I have several assisted opening flipper knives and didn't really see the need for a switchblade. However, I bought a Lightning out-the-front automatic and it has become my everyday carry knife. I'm in the construction business and it's really handy if I'm holding something with one hand and can pull the knife and make my cut and quickly put it back in my pocket with my other hand.

Will this create a new market for BBQ sheaths . . . ?

I doubt it, but it'll probably create a larger audience for jokes about Texas on late night television.

Wonder what's next for open carry in Texas?

I know nothing about capes, but this ends the arbitrary 5.5 inch blade length limit for publicly carried knives in TX. I think that's a good thing. It was always legal to own them, but not to carry or display them in public.

Always made me wonder . . . technically I was breaking the law whenever I bought a knife with a longer blade and carried it home in my vehicle. It never came up, but a friend was arrested during a routine traffic stop because he had a 12 inch bladed Bowie knife in the vehicle. He had no idea it was illegal to carry.

Setting aside the attempts at humor, what does the new law really allow? I need to know how it'll affect me, probably for the better.

Does this render void any city laws, like where San Antonio supposedly banned lockblade knives and Plano banned blades over three inches?

This seems a major step forward for knife rights. I'm quite sure that misuse of knives can be dealt with using laws against brandishing, threatening, etc.

It probably will not affect laws about carrying into the VA (which is a hospital, anyway) or the post office. I haven't been able to get a straight answer about whether an ordinary pocketknife is deemed a "weapon" by the USPS.

Those have been legal to open carry here for years.

After 18 months of permitted legal open carry in Texas for handguns, I still haven't seen anyone other than cops doing it. It will probably be about the same for knives, swords, and spears.

My son will feel easier about wearing his swords to renaissance fairs, and many fishermen can breathe easier about longer filet knives.

Sportsmen and campers can now carry knives like Buck's Models 119 and 120 and some of the best models from Randall, Fallkniven, etc. I have knives like that and it'll be a joy to wear them legally.

Add machetes, too.
