I do own on Smith semi, a 39-2, but ran into a 439 at my LGS today. It is in 98% condition, with 2 extra mags, no box, for $425. I can probably get it for less, but I am not sure how the 439 stacks up to the 39-2.

What are the improvements for 39 to 439? Is $425 a good price?

I sort of like the rear sight on the 439. Just not sure I can talk myself into another bottom stuffer.

This would be a shooter, if I get it.

The addition of the hammer drop/firing pin safety to the 439 was certainly an improvement over the 39 from the point of view of carrying the piece.
The sights were changed and later changes included an ambi safety lever, squared trigger guard and the elimination of the lanyard loop.

439 is pretty much 39-3 and I could swear mine has a lanyard loop. $425 is an outstanding price.

My 439 has the lanyard loop, and the round trigger guard. Adj rear sights too.

Many years ago I had a 39-2, then sold it. Later, I bought a 439. My 439 has the round trigger guard, fixed sights, lanyard loop, and a single sided safety. The 39-2 and 439 tend to be good handguns, not necessarily target pistols, but very reliable and capable of combat accuracy. The 439 added a firing pin block and changed the rear sight. The 439 fixed rear sight is drift adjustable by loosening the set screw and drifting the sight, much simpler and far fewer sharp edges than the semi-adjustable rear sight on the 39/39-2. The 439 could be had with a fully adjustable rear sight. This is a big sight with the protective ears on either side of the sight base and the slide will have a much taller front sight.

For a 98% model 439 with two extra mags, $425 is a good price. Genuine S&W mags tend to go for $30-45 on eBay.

Hello I got a 439 on a 3 gun deal 6 years ago and I didn't want to love it as much as I do. Hope you feel the same [emoji4]

Here are a few shots. It looks better in person....

That is a very nice 439. It has the adjustable sight, round trigger guard and ambidextrous safety. This, plus extra magazines, for $390, I think you did well. Watch the screw that holds the right side safety lever as they had a tendency to back out under recoil. Many people would put a little blue Loctite in it to prevent it from parting company with the slide.
