I have a model 14-3 and 17-4, that came w the smaller magna stocks..

Id like to have some target stocks..

while Id like vintage real S&W Targets they hover in the $100 and Up range. my main goal is to get a better grip, and looks aren’t UNimportant..

I got some Goncalo Alves Target stocks on eBay ($50) from cdnn sports

looked ok but didnt fit snug..had some slop even after tightening screws, so returned ‘em

ordered a couple of these from Numrich / GunPartsCorp.. had a discount code so they were $56 ea.. they say they’re exact reproductions , walnut w S&W medallions

anyone have any experience with ‘em ?

link to stocks:

Grips, Target, Square Butt, Checkered Walnut w/Speedloader Cut, New
tnx!

Those original ones (GA targets) are fetching $150 right now on Ebay.
These numrich ones have a better price. Other than new walnut, I wonder what other difference is there.
I know the newer stuff became Altamont manufacture. And it's more like resin compressed wood of some kind. ..

Nope but they look decent enough.
I have bought k frame targets and full checkered Colt I frame targets from jaruan on fleabay. Thailand hand made. $45 excellent!

I also purchased target grips from eBay seller jaruan and have been very pleased with his products. Great value and quality.

It's extremely hard to mass produce wood grips to fit every S&W frame that has rolled of the production lines over the years .
Tight fitting grips can be fitted with careful use of a sharp blade.
But loose grips ? Custom fit the wood grips to the frame with epoxy bedding compound or ...my preference , epoxy putty . The epoxy putty doesn't run . Fit one side at a time, attach the grip and note where the gaps are , lightly grease the metal , clean the wood with acetone on a Q-Tip , fill the gaps where wood and backstrap do not meet , the epoxy putty will adhere to the wood but not the greased metal . Go slowly , fitting several times to get all the movement out .
Do Not try to do both sides at once....
you will epoxy the grips together. Do one side , let cure , remove any excess then fit the other grip. Grease , your release agent, is your friend...use it !

I've tightened up many sets of ill fitting grips like this and none have ever come loose .
It sure beats buying and returning grips untill you get a perfectly fitted set .

Ahrends Retro Target or Retro Combat - 5 star for shooters .
Well made , snug fit and reasonable price .

I got the Thai/ e-Bay grips in combat style, one set for a J-frame and one for a square butt K-frame. The former were a close enough fit to require no action, but with time the latter seemed to dry out a bit and shrink away from the frame enough to get a little loose. Being basically lazy I shimmed them with a few strips of cardboard until I bed them with epoxy when I get a round tuit. I have to admit that my last shipment of tuits seems to be on backorder.

BTW, at one time the Thai dealers were able to supply grips made from a real dark ebony looking wood that looks great on a stainless gun.

I would like to add just one more tip on how to make the older used grips fit well and not move after years of use. The small hole on the bottom inside of grips sometimes get ovaled out from use. Make sure that hole fits tight over the pin at bottom of grip frame. No matter how much you tighten the screw they will move around slightly unless that pin is snuggly fit in hole. Wood putty can be used to create that tight fit. Simply fill hole with wood putty, it's better if you do not fill the hole completely. Then place grip on frame and smash it down. Some putty will be pushed out so carefully remove grip from frame and clean any putty that was smudged out without disturbing putty inside hole. Wait for putty to cure and test. If grips does not sit all the way down simply drill it down with an undersized small drill bit. Once that hole is a tight fit the grips will stay put.

Daddio... this was exactly the problem with my cdnn ebay grips... the small hole lower down on the inside of the stock was WAY to large.. and allowed the stock to shift back and forth..

the rest of the fit around the frame was quite good honestly..

now that I know the tips from members Ill be better prepared!

note: the Jaruwan stocks look great, and $45 good value... and the Ahrends at the $80-$100 price point look stellar... tnx for the referrals
