Optic for M&R OP carbine

My son has a had a new in the box Optics ready carbine since the election. This summer he wants to shoot it...

Optics choices are use dad's Leupold 6x42

or buy a cheap red dot optical sight

What do you think?

He will just be plinking and maybe shooting a few prairie dogs. Just fun shooting for someone out of college for the summer.

If prairie dogs are of major concern, the 6x scope will make shooting them easier.

If plinking is the main source of fun, it's hard to beat a Red Dot Scope. (although out to 150 yards or so, you can still hit prairie dog size targets with a little practice)

For a good RDS for not a lot of money, take a look at Primary Arms. Something like this for around $80.00 should be a winner.

Agree with the above post. One of the more popular red dots is the Vortex Strikefire which can be mounted for absolute cowitness with iron sights.

They go for about 150 including the AR mount. IF you should go this route, be sure to opt for the red dot only, NOT the red/ green version.

The red dot on the RG version is weaker than on the red only and difficult to see in bright light. It is a good quality and accurate scope though.

I replaced mine with a Nikon 223 1-4X which I love but now you are talking high twos with mount. Worth it though in MO.
